South Dakota Women's BB Team Rolls Past College of St. Mary, 90-53

VERMILLION, S.D. -- The South Dakota Women's Basketball Team (12-3) utilized its three-point shot mastery to record its fourth straight win with a 90-53 nonconference decision over the College of St. Mary (8-10) on Sunday afternoon at the DakotaDome.

The Coyotes knocked home 16-of-37 three-point field goals for 43.2 percent in the win. While USD made just 6-of-21 in the first half, the Coyotes connected on 10-of-16 for 62.5 percent in the second half. Overall, USD hit 30-of-62 field goals for 48.4 percent and also connected on 14-of-16 shots from the charity stripe.

USD had five players score in double figures, include a team-high 19 points from sophomore guard Jenni Flynn, who also had six rebounds and two steals. Flynn of South Sioux City, Neb., hit 6-of-9 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 from three point range. Sophomore forward Vanessa Yanez of Wagner, S.D., added 16 points and seven rebounds. Yanez had a career-best five three-point field goals (eight attempts). Freshman Ashley Robinette scored in double figures for the second straight game and had 13 points. Robinette of South Sioux City, Neb., had a perfect shooting game, making 4-of-4 from the field, including both of her three-point shots. She also made three free throws and grabbed two rebounds with two assists and two steals. Ashley Bjorkman, a redshirt freshman from Vermillion, S.D., had a career-high with 11 points and connected on three, three-point field goals. Freshman Janielle Bryan of Bellevue, Neb., added 11 points as she made 4-of-6 from the field.

In addition, Meghan Woster had 11 assists, which is her fifth double digit assist game this season. Woster also had six points and four rebounds.

This is the fourth straight game USD has made 14 or more three-point shots as a team. The 16 three-pointers against St. Mary was a season-high for the Coyotes. In all, nine players scored for USD.

St. Mary hit 18-of-52 field goals for 34.6 percent, including just 2-of-9 (22.2 percent) from three-point range. They made 15-of-22 free throws for 68.2 percent. St. Mary won the rebound battle, 36-32. Sandy Kirchner led St. Mary with 21 points. Katie Jo Lawton had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Flames.

Key for South Dakota was its defensive pressure, which recorded 10 steals and forced St. Mary into 15 turnovers. USD committed a season low five turnovers.

The Coyotes took command of the game early, jumping to an 11-4 lead at the 14:49 mark after a three-point field goal by Yanez. South Dakota went on a 15-5 run to build the lead to 26-9 after Flynn hit a three-pointer with 7:52 to play in the first half. Later, Flynn was fouled (:57) on a three-point shot and made all three charity tosses to give USD a 34-16 lead, which it took into the halftime break.

In the first 20 minutes, Flynn recorded 13 points, four rebounds and two steals. Yanez added 10 points and six rebounds. Sandy Kirchner led St. Mary with six points in the first half.

The Coyotes hit 10-of-30 field goals for 33.3 percent, including 6-of-21 from three-point range for 28.6 percent in the opening stanza. USD was 8-of-9 from the foul line. The College of St. Mary hit 7-of-26 field goals for 26.9 percent but failed to make a three-point field goal in four shots. They were 2-of-4 from the foul line.

In the second half, USD came out on fire from long distance. USD hit 8-of-10 shots from three-point range and built a 69-31 lead with 11:25 to play after Bjorkman hit a three-point shot. Then Bryan scored inside twice as USD increased its lead to 73-32 with 10:32 to play. From that point, head coach Chad Lavin emptied his bench. A three-pointer by Kristi Tighe of Homer, Neb., gave the Coyotes an 88-52 lead with 1:36 to play.

Next for South Dakota is its road NCC opener at North Dakota on Jan. 15. Gametime for the USD-UND game is set for 6 p.m. on Saturday night in Grand Forks, N.D.
