South Dakota Women's Basketball Team Stops Three-Game Losing Streak with 96-88 Win

ST. CLOUD, MINN. -- The South Dakota women's basketball team (15-12, 3-9 NCC) broke a three-game losing streak with a 96-88 win over St. Cloud State (19-8, 6-6 NCC) on Saturday night at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.

South Dakota, which has struggled shooting the ball late this season, changed things on Saturday by hitting 58.2% (32-of-55) from the field. USD was 12-of-21 (57.1%) on three-point field goals for the game, while connecting on 20-of-24 (83.3%) free throws.

St. Cloud State converted two free throws at 19:46 in the first half to give the Huskies their only lead of the game, 2-0.

The Coyotes Meghan Woster (Sioux Falls, S.D.) knocked in a jumper at 19:18 to tie the game and started a 9-0 run that put USD up 9-2 at 15:44 capped by a jumper by Jenni Flynn (South Sioux City, Neb.).

From there, USD continued to build its lead to as many as 18 in the first half before holding a 46-39 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Coyote's lead slipped to four at 3:46 on trey by the Huskies Katie Huschle to make the score 80-76, but USD's Vanessa Yanez (Wagner, S.D.) answered with three of her team-high 22 points.

Flynn finished with 19 points for USD, which had five players in double figures. Brittany Bessert (Fort Collins, Neb.) and Woster had 15 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists. Kayla Jacobs (Watertown, S.D.) had 10 points.

The difference in the game was USD's ablility to get to the free throw line where they had 10 more free throw attempts than the Huskies.

St. Cloud State also shot well from the field and behind the arc, knocking down 51.5% (34-of-66) field goals and 52.4% (11-of-21) from three-point land. The Huskies, who were outrebounded by the Coyotes, 32-29, were 9-of-14 (64.3%) at the free throw line.

The Huskies were led by Huschle's 30 points and 16 from Sascha Hansen. Erika Quigley and Shannon Francis each added 11.

With the win, USD will be the seventh seed and travel to Duluth, Minn., on Tuesday, March 1, to play at Minnesota-Duluth in the first round of the North Central Conference tournament.
