COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. --
The University of South Dakota Women's Basketball Team improved to 3-1 on the season with an 82-66 non-conference win over UC-Colorado Springs at the Hyatt Place Mountain Lion Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Saturday night.
Jeana Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) led the Coyotes to its 500th all-time win by scoring 21 points. USD is now 500-389 (.562) in the history of the program which dates to 1972.
Hoffman, who is averaging 22.8 points per game this season, hit 8-of-12 shots from the field, including 3-of-5 from three-point range in the win over the Mountain Lions. Hoffman is off to a torrid start shooting the ball this season. She has made 32-of-58 field goals for 55.2 percent and 17-of-33 three-point field goals for 51.5 percent.
USD senior guard Shannon Daly added 16 points, three assists and two rebounds against UCCS. Senior forward Ashley Robinette (South Sioux City, Neb.) had 13 points by making 4-of-7 shots from the field and two three-point field goals. Also reaching double figures in scoring was junior forward Bridget Yoerger (Hinton, Iowa) with 11 points and eight rebounds.
The Coyotes hit 26-of-57 shots from the field for 45.6 percent, including 9-of-24 from three-point range for 37.5 percent. USD was 21-of-26 from the free throw line.
Tonya Tripp led UC-Colorado Springs with 26 points and eight rebounds. UCCS hit 25-of-68 shots from the field for 36.8 percent. They were 4-of-16 from the three-point line and 12-of-17 from the free throw line.
UC-Colorado Springs jumped to a quick 7-0 lead after Nancy Hoist hit a pair of free throws at the 18:01 mark of the first half. However, the Coyotes gradually found the range and cut the lead to 9-7 after Hoffman hit a jumper at the 15:29 mark. USD took its first lead of the game (17-15) with 10:09 to play in the first half after Hoffman hit a three-point field goal. USD had a 9-2 run to push their advantage to 26-17 at the 6:49 mark as Hoffman again connected from three-point range. UCCS fought their way back into the game with a 15-8 run to cut USD's advantage to 34-32 with 1:23 left in the first half. USD scored the final three points of the half and took a 37-32 lead into halftime. The Coyotes hit 13-of-28 field goals for 46.4 percent in the first half while UCCS made just 12-of-33 for 36.4 percent.
The Coyotes had a 11-2 run to open the second half and took a 48-34 lead at the 15:51 mark. Later, Maggie Youngberg (Jr., Yankton, S.D.) connected from three-point range to help USD to a 54-39 advantage. A three-pointer by Robinette at the 10:49 mark provided USD with an 18-point lead at 64-46. USD's largest lead of the game was 72-52 at the 5:54 mark after a layup by Jenna Hoffman (Jr., Mitchell, S.D.).
Next for South Dakota will be a road game against Northwest Missouri State on Nov. 28 in Maryville, Mo.
