19th-Ranked South Dakota Women's Basketball Team Wins 11th Straight With 90-51 Win over Chadron State

VERMILLION, S.D. - Featuring solid outside shooting and a relentless defense, The University of South Dakota women's basketball team won its 11th straight game with a 90-51 decision over Chadron State in non-conference action on Monday afternoon at the DakotaDome.

The Coyotes, who are ranked 19th in NCAA Division II, improved to 13-1 which ties the 2006-07 team for the third best start in school history. The 11 consecutive wins by USD is the longest streak since the 2003-04 Coyote team won 14 straight games in a 15-1 start.

From the outset, the Coyotes put the defensive clamps on Chadron State who committed 30 turnovers and scored just 51 points. For the seventh time this season, USD held an opponent under 60 points.

How impressive was USD's defense? By game's end, USD owned a 47-5 advantage in points off turnovers. Meanwhile, the Coyotes used a consistent long-range attack (12-of-32 from three-point range) to roll up 90 points. It is the third time this season (all wins) that USD score 90 points or more. Senior shooting guard Jeana Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) was on fire Monday afternoon with 29 points on 9-of-11 shooting from the field. Hoffman made a season-best six three-point field goals on eight attempts. For the ninth time this season, Hoffman recorded at least four 3-point field goals in a game. She reached double-digits in points for the 14th straight game and the 45th time of her career. Additionally, Hoffman surpassed 20 points for the 12th time in her career. She now sits just seven points away from 1,000 points (616 at USD) in her career.

USD received 17 points from junior forward Bridget Yoerger (Hinton, Iowa), who made 6-of-9 field goals. Yoerger also recorded three steals and had five rebounds. Jenna Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) set a career-best with nine assists while also scoring four points and recording three steals. USD received strong contributions from its bench with Maggie Youngberg (Jr., Yankton, S.D.) scoring nine points. In total, the USD bench scored 28 points against the Eagles.

For the game, South Dakota made 31-of-71 field goals for 43.7 percent, including 12-of-32 from three-point range for 37.5 percent. The Coyotes hit 16-of-24 free throws for 66.7 percent. Chadron State, which was led in scoring by Kristy Long with 14 points, made just 18-of-49 field goals for 36.7 percent. The Eagles hit 7-of-18 three-point field goals for 38.9 percent and 8-of-10 free throws for 80 percent.

USD jumped to a quick 8-3 lead when Jeana Hoffman and Shannon Daly (Sr., Groton, S.D.) connected on three-point baskets just two minutes into the game. Chadron State cut the lead to 12-10 before the Coyotes asserted control with a 24-4 run. With Jeana Hoffman's three-point basket, USD built a commanding 36-14 advantage with just 5:49 left to play in the first half. Chadron State was able to trim just four points off the lead and trailed 43-25 at the halftime break. Turnovers were a major factor as USD built the large first-half lead. The Coyotes owned a 20-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the opening half of play. Hoffman had 20 points in the first half to lead USD.

Right out of halftime, the Coyotes put the game away by running off a 19-2 run for a 62-27 lead with 16:52 to play in the game. Jeana Hoffman had two three-point baskets and Robinette added one during the run. Later, the Coyotes built its largest lead of the game at 46 points (88-42) with 3:51 left in the game.

South Dakota will try and win its 12th straight game when the Coyotes host the University of Sioux Falls at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, January 2 at the DakotaDome.
