The University of South Dakota women's basketball team won its sixth straight game with a come-from-behind 81-65 decision over Dixie State on Saturday at the Concordia Tournament in Irvine, Calif. The Coyotes improved to 8-1 on the season and finished 2-0 at the tournament. USD's six consecutive wins is the most since early in the 2006-07 season when the Coyotes reeled off nine straight victories.
South Dakota, which won its second straight game after trailing at halftime, was led by the double-digit scoring efforts of sisters Jeana and Jenna Hoffman, who combined for 40 points. Jeana Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) led all scorers with 26 points. Hoffman, who reached double-digits for the ninth straight game, made 9-of-15 shots from the field, including 4-of-7 from three-point range while also contributing four rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jenna Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) had 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Bridget Yoerger (Jr., Hinton, Iowa) added 12 points and two rebounds while Ashley Robinette (Sr., South Sioux City, Neb.) scored nine points.
Overall, the Coyotes made 31-of-59 field goals for a season-high 52.5 percent. USD also recorded a season-high 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from three point range. The Coyotes were perfect from the foul line on 10-of-10 shooting.
Dixie State, which was led in scoring by Denny Phommabout with 22 points, hit 19-of-41 field goals for 46.3 percent, including 2-of-7 from three-point range. Dixie State was 25-of-27 (92.6 percent) from the foul line.
With the score tied at 13-13 (13:00), Dixie State had a 7-0 run to take a 20-13 lead with 11:35 to play in the first half. The Coyotes used a 6-2 run to close within 22-19 at the 7:28 mark of the first half. A lay-up by Jeana Hoffman cut Dixie State's lead to 24-23 with 5:02 left in the half. USD tied the game at 30-30 when Jenna Hoffman hit a three-point field goal at the 2:33 mark. Dixie State ended the half on a 7-5 run to take a 37-35 lead into the halftime break.
Before this weekend, USD had lost its last seven games (dating back to last year) when trailing at halftime. The Coyotes reversed that trend with a second half rally in a 59-50 win over California State-Dominguez Hills on Friday night. The Coyotes continued their second-half comeback ways by outscoring Dixie State, 46-28, in the second half.
USD opened the second half on a 20-7 run to take a 55-45 lead with 12:51 to play in the game. The Coyotes increased the advantage to 22 points at 75-53 when Shannon Daly (Sr., Groton, S.D.) hit a jump shot. Later, Amber Hegge (Fr., Crofton, Neb.) made a jumper as the Coyotes enjoyed its biggest lead at 80-57 with just 2:51 left in the game.
The key to USD's second half surge was its play inside. The Coyotes outscored Dixie State, 20-8, in the paint during the second half and had an 18-9 advantage in points off turnovers. The Coyotes' bench also contributed with 15 points, including eight by Hegge, who hit 4-of-5 shots from the field.
The Coyotes will return home for a pair of games next weekend at the DakotaDome. The Coyotes will host Southwest Minnesota State at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15 before facing Mount Mercy at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16.
