11th-ranked South Dakota Women's Basketball Team Defeats Augustana, 85-80 in Overtime

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The University of South Dakota women's basketball team outscored Augustana, 11-6 in overtime, as the Coyotes recorded their 13th consecutive win with an 85-80 overtime decision over the Vikings on Saturday at the Sioux Falls Arena.

South Dakota, which is ranked 11th in NCAA Division II, moved to 15-1 overall and 1-0 in the NCC. The Vikings dropped to 15-4 overall and 1-1 in the NCC. The win for USD was a reversal of a 66-64 loss to Augustana last season at the DakotaDome when the Coyotes lost its league opener at home. USD improved to 5-0 in road games this season.

The 13-game winning streak is USD's best since the 2003-04 team opened 15-1 with a 14-game winning streak. At 15-1, USD is enjoying the second-best start in school history (tied with the 2003-04 team). The win was important as the Coyotes hit the road again next weekend with a conference game on January 19 against No. 1 ranked North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D.

Jeana Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) led USD with a game-high 25 points, including 6-of-14 from 3-point range. The six 3-pointers by Hoffman tied her season-high and allowed her to tie Anne Knudtson for seventh on the USD career three-point chart with 131. In addition, Hoffman surpassed 1,000 points for her career and now has scored 1,019 points (641 at USD). Hoffman, who has made four or more three-pointers in a game 10 times this season, recorded her eighth 20-point game this season.

USD also received double digits from point guard Jenna Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.), who had 14 points and nine rebounds to go with three assists. Shannon Daly (Sr., Groton, S.D.), Ashley Robinette (Sr., South Sioux City, Neb.), Amber Hegge (Fr., Crofton, Neb.) and Maggie Youngberg (Jr., Yankton, S.D.) all scored nine points for USD. Bridget Yoerger (Jr., Hinton, Iowa) had eight points and nine rebounds.

Hoffman's outside game complimented the long range artistry of South Dakota which finished with 15 3-point field goals in 33 attempts for 45.5 percent. The Coyotes needed the three-point baskets as USD hit a season-low of 47.6 percent from the foul line on 10-of-21 shooting. USD made 30-of-66 field goals for 45.5 percent for the game.

The Vikings were led in scoring by Ashley Holiday and Amy Puthoff, who both had 25 points. Holiday also had 12 rebounds. Augustana made 24-of-57 field goals for 42.1 percent, including just 6-of-24 from 3-point range. However, they hit 26-of-30 free throws for 86.7 percent. While USD held the big advantage in three-point shots (15 to 6), the Vikings outscored USD at the foul line by a 26-10 margin. The Vikings owned a 39-37 rebound edge .

After Augustana scored the first basket of the game, South Dakota received a 3-point shot from Robinette for a 3-2 lead with 19:10 left in the opening half. With USD ahead 9-8, the Coyotes had a 16-4 run for a 25-12 lead at the 8:05 mark. A key play in the run was a 3-point shot by Youngberg at the 8:59 mark that provided USD with a 22-12 lead.

Augustana responded with their own 19-6 run over the final eight minutes of the half as the teams went to the halftime break tied at 32-32. Down 13, the Vikings had a 10-0 run that was capped by an inside basket from Ashley Holiday at the 5:48 mark of the first half. After Robinette gave USD a 31-26 lead (2:58) with another three-point shot, Augustana scored the final five points of the half. Jenna Hoffman led USD with 11 points and five rebounds in the opening half. Holiday led Augustana with eight points.

USD hit 12-of-33 field goals for 36.4 percent, including 6-of-16 from three-point range for 37.5 percent. Augustana made 10-of-26 field goals for 38.5 percent, including 2-of-11 from three-point range. The Vikings converted 9-of-9 shots from the foul line while USD had just two shots (1-2) from the foul line.

The second half was very similar to the opening half with USD building a large lead followed by an Augustana rally late in the game. With the score tied 54-54 with 9:40 left in the game, USD used a 10-1 run to take a 64-55 lead at the 7:22 mark. USD built the lead to 67-55 at the 6:39 mark after Hoffman hit her second 3-point basket within a span of 57 seconds. At the 5:18 mark, Youngberg hit her third three-pointer of the game (three attempts) to give USD a 70-59 advantage.

From that point, Augustana closed the game on a 15-4 run to force overtime. Amy Puthoff hit a three-pointer with 1:25 to play in the game as the Vikings drew within 74-70. With 10 seconds to go, Holiday converted a jumper to tie the game at 74-74.

As was the case during the course of the game, USD again opened up a large lead in the overtime. With Hoffman's sixth 3-pointer of the game, the Coyotes had an 83-74 lead with just 1:36 left in the overtime period. The Vikings closed the gap to four points but did not get any closer as USD picked up the win in the 63rd meeting between the schools.
