Hoffman and Robinette Lead the Fourth-Ranked South Dakota Women's Basketball Team to 74-51 Win over Minnesota State

MANKATO, Minn. - Jeana Hoffman and Ashley Robinette combined for 40 points to lead The University of South Dakota women's basketball team to a 74-51 win over Minnesota State on Thursday night at the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn. South Dakota, ranked fourth in NCAA Division II, has won a school record 19 consecutive games.

With the win, the Coyotes improved to 21-1 on the season and continue to lead the North Central Conference with a 7-0 record. The U swept the regular season series against Minnesota State and defeated the Mavericks for the fifth straight time. USD, which is ranked number one in the North Central Region, improved to 8-0 record in road games this season. The Mavericks dropped to 17-7 overall and 3-6 in the NCC.

South Dakota has put together the best seven-game mark in league play in school history (6-1, 2002-03).

Robinette (Sr., South Sioux City, Neb.) had a season-high 18 points by making a career-high six shots (seven attempts) from three-point range. Robinette also had four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals.

Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) finished with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. She recorded her 11th 20-point effort of the season while making six, 3-point field goals in a game for the third time this season. She also moved into second place on the Coyotes' all-time season chart for three-point baskets with 80. The senior guard took over fifth-place on USD's career three-point list with 151 (Julia Frie, 150, 1999-2003).

Junior forward Bridget Yoerger (Hinton, Iowa) just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. She also recorded a career-high of four blocked shots in 22 minutes of work.

Defense and three-point shooting keyed the Coyotes' win. The U, which leads the nation in three-point shooting (10.0), was on fire against MSU. The Coyotes made 15-of-32 three-point field goals for 46.9 percent. They were 9-of-15 for 60 percent from long distance in the second half. In addition, USD tied a season-high with nine 3-point field goals in the second half. It was the third time this season that the Coyotes have made 15 or more three-point shots in a game.

For the 12th time this season, South Dakota held an opponent to less than 60 points. The Coyotes forced the Mavericks into 17 turnovers while tying a season-high with seven blocked shots.

Overall, South Dakota hit 46.6 percent from the field on 27-of-58 shooting. They made 17-of-33 shots for 51.5 percent in the second half. The Coyotes also converted 5-of-6 shots from the foul stripe.

Minnesota State was led by Joanne Noreen with 11 points. The Mavericks struggled from the field by hitting just 19-of-57 field goals for 33.3 percent. They were 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from three-point range and 11-of-15 from the foul line for 73.3 percent.

Led by Robinette's 12 first-half points, the Coyotes took a 29-22 halftime lead. When leading at the halftime break, USD has won 34 straight games.

Robinette opened the game by hitting a pair of three-point baskets as USD built a 6-2 lead at the 17:26 mark of the first half. Robinette hit another three-pointer to give the Coyotes a 15-6 lead with 13:05 left in the half.

After Jeana Hoffman hit a three-point shot at the 8:56 mark, the Coyotes owned a 24-11 advantage. The Mavericks countered with an 8-0 run to draw within 24-19 at the 2:37 mark. Robinette stopped MSU's rally by hitting her fourth three-pointer of the half to give the Coyotes a 29-19 lead with 1:21 to play. USD's defense played a key role in building the first-half lead as the Coyotes had a 15-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

Noreen hit a three-point shot early in the second half as the Mavericks cut USD's lead to 29-25 (18:30). However, that was as close as Minnesota State would get for the rest of the game.

Over the next 6:19 of the half, the Coyotes took off on a 15-4 run to build a 44-29 advantage with 13:49 to play. Hoffman hit a three-pointer with 10:06 to play to give USD a 17-point lead (52-35). The Mavericks tried to make a run at the Coyotes as Heather Johnson's basket cut the lead to 60-47 with 4:51 on the clock. However, USD responded by closing the game on a 14-4 run with Hoffman connecting on three, 3-point baskets.

Next for the Coyotes will be a road game with St. Cloud State at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn.
