Jeana Hoffman scored 27 points to lead
The University of South Dakota women's basketball team to the biggest win in school history at the Elite Eight Championship quarterfinals on Wednesday. The third-ranked Coyotes won for the 30th consecutive time and advanced to the national semifinals with an 85-80 double overtime win over 24th-ranked Washburn (26-7). It will be the Coyotes' first-ever appearance in the Division II Final Four.
South Dakota, which improved to 32-1 on the season, will face top-ranked and unbeaten Delta State (33-0) at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday night at the Health and Sports Center in Kearney, Neb.
The overtime win is the second time this season for the Coyotes, who defeated Augustana, 85-80 in overtime, on January 12 in Sioux Falls. The U also won for the sixth straight time this season against a ranked opponent. In addition, USD won for the 25th straight time this season when holding a halftime lead.
The Coyotes defeated Washburn, which won a national title in 2005, on the strength of the outside artistry of Hoffman and Ashley Robinette and solid inside play from junior forward Bridget Yoerger (Hinton, Iowa).
The senior combination of Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) and Robinette (South Sioux City, Neb.) led the Coyotes in scoring with a combined 40 points. Hoffman made four three-point field goals on nine attempts and also made 7-of-8 from the foul line as she had the 19th 20-point game of her career. Hoffman, named a State Farm/WBCA All-American on Tuesday, has scored in double digits for the 32nd time this season and 63rd time in her career.
Robinette, who made 3-of-7 from three-point range, had 13 points. Yoerger added 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the field while also totaling and six rebounds. Jenna Hoffman (Sr., Mitchell, S.D.) had 11 points.
Jenna Hoffman's two free throws with three seconds left in the second overtime iced the win for the Coyotes. Also for the Coyotes, freshman Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) scored eight points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. In the two overtime sessions, USD knocked down 12-of-14 free throws.
Washburn, who continually fought back from deficits all night, had a game-high 31 points from Corky Stiger, who made 8-of-19 from three-point range. Janice Bright had 16 points and eight rebounds for Washburn.
South Dakota hit 43.1 percent from the field on 28-of-65 shooting. However, the Coyotes struggled from three-point range by making just 7-of-25 for 28 percent. However, the Coyotes, who hit just 68.1 percent from the foul line for the season, made 73.3 percent from the charity stripe (22-of-30) against Washburn.
Washburn controlled the boards with a 56 to 35 advantage. However, they also committed 23 turnovers while USD had just 12.
Robinette scored the first basket of the game with a driving layup at 18:51 as the Coyotes grabbed a quick 2-0 lead. The Lady Blues answered with a five-point run for a 5-2 lead. Robinette responded with a three-pointer and Jeana Hoffman scored on a layup off a feed from her sister (Jenna) for a 7-5 lead at the 15:45 mark.
Stiger caught fire and made three consecutive three-point baskets as the Lady Blues built a 16-10 lead at the 12:06 mark of the first half. USD responded with four straight points, including a three-point field goal from Hoffman (10:27), as they cut the deficit to 16-14 at the 9:45 mark. Hoffman, who had 13 first-half points, hit another three-point shot at the 8:52 mark to help the Coyotes regain the lead at 17-16. Yoerger scored inside as the Coyotes built a 26-18 lead at the 4:26 mark.
Later, Robinette followed a Yoerger inside basket with a deep three-point shot at the 3:03 mark for a 10-point lead (31-21). Bright scored in the closing seconds as Washburn cut USD's lead to 33-26 at halftime.
Washburn opened the second half on a 15-2 run, including three straight 3-point baskets (Jessica Mainz, Hope Gregory, Stiger), to take a 41-35 lead with 15:12 to play. South Dakota countered with a 10-1 run as Robinette hit her third three-point shot of the game at the 11:30 mark for a 45-42 USD advantage. Hoffman's three-point shot at the 7:00 mark gave USD a 54-51 lead. Yoerger's drive to the basket at the 4:48 mark helped USD to a 56-51 lead as the Coyotes culminated a 21-10 run.
Stiger, who continually made big shots down the stretch, hit a three-point shot to cut the lead to 58-57. Yoerger scored inside with 1:30 to play for a 61-57 lead. Then, USD fouled Stiger on a three-point shot attempt with 23 seconds to go and she made all three shots to trim the USD lead to 61-60. Jenna Hoffman made two free throws with 22.2 seconds left but Stiger's three-pointer with 15 seconds left tied the score at 63-63.
Early in the first overtime, Hegge provided USD with a 65-63 lead (4:44) by making a pair of free throws. Hoffman scored on a drive to the basket to give USD a 70-67 lead with 1:48 to play. However, Stiger hit another 3-point field goal to tie the game at 70-70. Then, Yoerger responded with an inside score and made a free throw after being fouled with :50 seconds left for a 73-70 advantage. With 15 seconds left, Washburn's Jessica Mainz answered with a three to tie the game at 73-73.
In the second overtime, the Coyotes outscored the Lady Blues, 12-7, as they evened the all-time record against Washburn to 1-1.
Yoerger's basket with 57 seconds left gave USD a 75-73 lead. From there, they stopped Washburn and Jenna Hoffman's driving layup provided USD with a four-point lead. Shannon Daly (Sr., Groton, S.D.) made two free throws with 14 seconds left as the the Coyotes built a six-point lead. WU's Janice Bright answered with a three-pointer but Jenna Hoffman capped the scoring with two free throws with 3.3 seconds on the clock.
