HOUSTON, TEXAS -- The University of South Dakota women's basketball team went a on 20-5 run to start the second half but still came up short as Houston Baptist University pulled away to earned a 65-55 victory over the Coyotes on Friday evening in Houston, Texas.
The Coyotes fall to 12-4 overall while Houston Baptist improves to 6-12 overall earning their second straight win.
USD, who trailed by as much as 19, battled back to take four-point lead with 10 minutes remaining but were outscored 25-11 in the final 10 minutes of the game.
South Dakota was led by Bridget Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, Iowa) with 17 points and 12 rebounds, marking her eighth double-double of the season. Jasmine Mosley (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) was second on the team with 13 points while having nine rebounds and a team-high five assists. Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion, S.D.) added 12 points after hitting four three-pointers.
The Coyotes got off to a slow start as USD did not score for the first eight minutes of the game, while Houston Baptist took advantage going on a 15-0 run to start the game. South Dakota later trailed by as much as 19 points as the score was 24-5.
Wiemann, who moved to third all-time for career three-pointers, gave the Coyotes some momentum as she hit two big three-pointers to bring the Coyotes back within 15 at 26-11, with six minutes remaining in the first half. She later hit another three to bring USD within six.
The Huskies, however, went into halftime holding a 35-24 advantage after forcing the Yotes to commit eight turnovers and shoot 30 percent (9-30) from the field in the first half. Wiemann led the squad in the first 20 minutes with nine points.
In the second half, Yoerger converted some three-point plays and gave the Coyotes the lead at 44-40 with 10 minutes remaining. HBU however battled back and gained a 53-50 lead with 3:35 remaining and never looked back.
South Dakota finished the game shooting 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the field and 27.3 percent from three-point range. The Huskies shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) while also holding a 44-36 rebounding advantage.
USD will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24 in Grand Forks, N.D. as they face the University of North Dakota at 2 p.m.
NOTE: Wiemann moved to third on the all-time list of three-pointers as she has 183 in her career.
