Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. -- A three-goal first half was the difference as Utah Valley defeated
The University of South Dakota women's soccer team, 3-0 in Great West Conference action Sunday in Vermillion, S.D.
Camille Broderick, Lauren Bluth and Athena Maher had goals for Utah Valley (3-9, 2-0 Great West), which spoiled the Coyotes' 2009 home finale.
USD (3-9-1, 1-2 Great West) trailed 3-0 at halftime but battled the Wolverines even in the second half. However, the Coyotes were unable to find the net, although Erin Bello (RFr., Fort Collins, Colo.) hitting the post on a shot late in the second half.
"It was nice to see the intensity we are exercising and the strong desire to win," said USD head coach Marcia Oliveira. "However, we must play consistently smart and as a team. UVU came out in a faster pace that we already knew and we were not able to stay composed in our own game. We are looking to learn from these two conference games and do better the next time we meet them again. Right now, it is time to get some injured players back and go stronger and play smart in the second part of the conference schedule."
Bello led USD with seven shots, including two shots on goal. Katie Quinones (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) added five shots, while Jennifer Ogren (Jr., Raymore, Mo.) had 12 saves in net for USD.
The Coyotes are off until Oct. 25 when they play at North Dakota for a 1 p.m. contest.
Notes: Senior Katie Whithorn (Omaha, Neb.) was honored on Senior Day. Whithorn, who has started 66 games in her USD career, received a rose from each Coyote player, coach and trainer prior to the game...it was the first meeting ever between USD and Utah Valley in women's soccer. The two teams will meet Oct. 29 in Orem, Utah.
