Vermillion, S.D. - South Dakota football announced its Team Award Winners for the 2009 season during its annual team banquet on Sunday in the Muenster University Center on USD's campus.
Senior quarterback Noah Shepard (Thornton, Colo.) was named the Coyotes' Most Valuable Player for a second consecutive season. He passed for 2,451 yards and 21 touchdowns by connecting on 188-of-297 attempts, while also rushing for 580 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2009. Shepard rewrote the USD record book during his four years at USD and leaves as one of the top quarterbacks in school history.
Sophomore running back Chris Ganious (Houston, Texas) was named Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for a team-leading 828 yards and four touchdowns on 148 carries. He was named the Great West Conference's Player of the Week once during the season and also earned Academic All-America honors in the classroom. The Defensive Player-of-the-Year award was shared by senior defensive linemen Ko Quaye (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Wayne Curry (Tampa, Fla). Quaye posted 31 tackles, including seven for loss, on the season, while Curry had 39 stops and a conference-leading seven sacks. Junior linebacker Eric Leon (Lancaster, Calif.) was named the Special Teams Player of the Year.
Lineman-of-the-Year honors went to seniors Jake Arthur (Clark, S.D.) and Luke Nordquist (Lake City, S.D.), who were part of an offensive squad that surrendered just 10 sacks during the season. Senior wide receiver Ben Oberle (Vermillion, S.D.) and senior defensive lineman Abe Booker (Bloomington, Minn.) shared the Coaches' Award. Oberle had 21 catches for 385 yards and four touchdowns before a season-ending ankle injury, while Booker had 28 tackles and three sacks.
Senior linebacker Ryan Routh (Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up the Bulldog Award and freshman wide receiver Tom Flanagan (Lakewood, Colo.) was named Most Valuable Freshman. Offensive and Defensive Scout of the Year went to freshman running back Donovan Bowens (Arvada, Colo.) and freshman defensive lineman Taylor Moore (Milwaukee, Wisc.), respectively.
