NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- Amber Hegge's basket with less than a second left was the game-winner as
The University of South Dakota women's basketball team rallied to stun Cal State-Northridge, 47-46 in action Tuesday night in Northridge, Calif.
USD (5-4) trailed the entire contest and was down by as many as 13 points in the first half. Hegge's basket gave USD its first - and only - lead of the game.
Hegge (So., Crofton, Neb.) led USD with 10 points. Abby Kinder (Jr., Granger, Ind.) and Jasmine Mosley (Sr., Bellevue, Neb.) had seven each.
Down 38-29 with 10:34 left, USD started its comeback. Over the next eight minutes, the Coyotes outscored the Matadors 14-6, cutting the lead to 44-43 with 2:22 left after Kara Iverson (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) drained a crucial three-pointer.
The Matadors (2-7) built the lead back to 46-43, but a Mosley layup brought USD back within 46-45 with 20 seconds left. Cal State-Northridge missed a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds, keeping the lead at one.
With three seconds left, the Matadors called a timeout with USD holding a possession. The Coyotes drew up a play and Hegge scored, leaving 0.4 seconds left on the clock. USD's defense prevented any CSN shot attempt at the end, preserving a one-point Coyote win.
USD won despite struggling shooting the ball. USD hit just 32.2 percent (19-of-59) of its field-goal attempts, including just 19 percent from three-point range (4-of-21). The Matadors shot 38.2 percent from the field but were only 1-of-11 (9.1 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Coyotes, playing for the first time in nine days, started slowly from the field, hitting three of their first 15 field goal attempts (20 percent) in falling behind 19-6 in the first 10 minutes.
USD was even more frigid from three-point range, starting out 0-for-11 from behind the arc before finally breaking the ice with 2:03 left in the first half when Teresa Case (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) drained a three. Case followed that with another three moments later to help USD cut the gap to 24-18 with 1:53 left in the half.
Despite shooting just 30 percent (9-of-30) in the first half, USD was down just 28-21, thanks to a solid defensive effort.
Case had six points in the first half for USD, while Kinder had five and Hegge four. Iverson had five rebounds in the first half, while Kinder and Hegge had four each.
USD shot better in the second half, hitting 34.5 percent of its field goal attempts.
Annie Roche (So., Vermillion, S.D.), Case and Iverson had six points each. Iverson led with a career-high eight rebounds, while Kinder had four assists. Hegge and Kinder had seven rebounds each. Case had four steals.
USD continues action on the road on Saturday, Jan. 2 with a contest at Colorado State. Game time is 3:05 p.m. Central in Fort Collins, Colo.
