VERMILLION, S.D. -- Seattle University spoiled the home finale for
The University of South Daktoa women's basketball team on Saturday night, beating the Coyotes, 62-53 at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
Breanna Salley paced Seattle (19-7) with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Mercedes Alexander added 16 points and 18 rebounds.
For USD (16-9), Jasmine Mosley (Jr., Bellevue, Neb.) and Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion, S.D.) had 17 points each. Bridget Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, Iowa) added 10 points.
USD had mounted a rally from a 10-point second half deficit to take a 49-48 lead with 5:01 left in the contest. The game was tied at 51-51 with 4:08 left after Yoerger made a layup.
However, Seattle closed the contest on an 11-2 run to secure the win. Seattle was keyed by 68.2 percent shooting in the second half.
Seattle held a 48-24 edge in rebounds but committed 19 turnovers compared to nine for USD.
The Coyotes shot only 37.5 percent (21-of-56) for the contest.
The first half was a defensive battle as both teams shot less than 35 percent from the field. The biggest lead was five points (25-20) for USD at the 5:20 mark after Mosley sank a jumper.
Mosley had a solid first half with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Mosley had two assists and a steal as well. Wiemann added nine points for USD.
Seattle had a 33-13 edge in rebounds, including 13-1 on the offensive glass. The Coyotes did force 13 Seattle turnovers which were converted into 10 points.
Yoerger had three steals and five rebounds in the first half for USD.
The Coyotes resume action on Tuesday, March 3 at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
Notes: USD finished 12-5 at home this season...it was the final home game for USD seniors Yoerger, Wiemann, Natalie Carda (Sr., Beresford, S.D.), Amy Robinette (Sr., South Sioux City, Iowa) and Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton, S.D.). Youngberg had three points for USD, while Robinette and Carda both saw time off the bench.
