Yoerger Leads Coyote Women to 63-50 Win Over Houston Baptist

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Bridget Yoerger had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead The University of South Dakota women's basketball team to a 63-50 win over Houston Baptist in the consolation championship of the Spring Thaw Tournament in Grand Forks, N.D. on Sunday.

Yoerger (Sr., Hinton, Iowa) recorded her 14th double-double of 2008-09 for the Coyotes (18-10).

Annie Roche (RFr., Vermillion, S.D.) added 14 points and a team-high five assists for USD, while Kara Iverson (Jr., Yankton, S.D.) added 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Ashley Wiemann (Sr., Vermillion, S.D.) and Maggie Youngberg (Sr., Yankton, S.D.) had nine points each for the Coyotes.

Houston Baptist (8-21) led 2-0, which would be the only lead for the Huskies all day. The Coyotes went on a 22-5 run over the next 12 minutes to built a 22-7 lead.

Later in the half, the Coyotes built their biggest lead of the night (32-15) in the final minute of the first half after Iverson hit a free throw. USD took a 32-18 lead into halftime.

A big reason for USD's halftime lead was the Coyote defense, which limited HBU to just 20.7 percent shooting (6-of-29) in the first half. The Coyotes shot 46.2 (12-of-26) in the first half. Yoerger paced USD in the first half with 10 points, while Iverson had eight points and Roche had five.

USD pushed the lead back to 17 at 50-33 with 13:04 left after a Yoerger basket. HBU got no closer than 10 points in the second half.

USD shot 42 percent compared to 34 percent for HBU, and also had a 38-30 edge in rebounds.

Wiemann had three steals for USD, while Yoerger had two blocks.

The Coyotes will resume action on Sunday, March 15 at No. 11-ranked North Carolina. Game time is 4 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
