VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota golf teams squared off against North Dakota in the opening round of the USD-UND Cup, which was held Saturday at The Bluffs Golf Course in Vermillion, S.D.
The matches were done by a point system with the players being set up in two-person teams. The format was four-ball where the best score from each team was used in a match play format: two points for winning a hole, one point for a tie and four points for winning the match.
Overall, UND and USD are tied at 160-160 heading into Sunday's final round, which begins at noon at Prairie Green Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D. The USD men hold a 119-81 lead after Day 1, while the UND women hold an 80-40 lead.
For the USD men, Brett Bennett (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) shot a 71, followed by John Vining (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) with a 72. Jim Walsh (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) fired a 73 and Matt Campbell (Jr., Aberdeen, S.D.) added a 74 for the Coyotes.
For the USD women, Abby Doorn (So., Spencer, Iowa) led the way with a 78. Katie Benedict (Fr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Steph Zavilla (So., Highlands Ranch, Colo.) each carded 87s for the Coyotes.
