Box Score MOSCOW, Idaho - Midfielder Katie Quinones scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season, but
The University of South Dakota women's soccer team fell to Idaho, 2-1, on Friday in Moscow, Idaho.
USD battled the Vandals to a 0-0 draw at halftime, but UI's Sari Morrison scored early in the second period to put Idaho up and Jill Flockhart added to the lead midway through the frame. Quinones (Jr., Rochester, Minn.) teamed with fellow midfielder Katie Whithorn (Sr., Omaha, Neb.) late in the game to cut the lead to one. Whithorn sent a long pass forward that Quinones was able to run down and tap over the head of Idaho goalkeeper Liz Boyden for the score. The assist was Whithorn's first of the season, but South Dakota was unable to find the equalizing goal.
Goalkeeper Jennifer Ogren (Jr., Raymore, Mo.) once again put forth a great effort to keep USD in the contest. Named the Great West Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, Ogren posted nine saves against the Vandals, including seven in the second half.
"We played well and kept the game close," said USD head coach Marcia Oliveira. "We still need to be more disciplined tactically to exploit the opponents' weaknesses more effectively. It was a good first encounter vs. Idaho and we will have them coming into Vermillion to play us next year."
Offensively, Quinones finished with three shots, while Yutzil Rodriguez (Fr., Pierre, S.D.) and Erin Bello (RFr., Fort Collins, Colo.) both added a shot each.
South Dakota (2-5-1) continues its season with a 1 p.m. game against Eastern Washington on Sunday in Cheney, Wash.
