VERMILLION, S.D. - Senior forward Kara Iverson notched a career-high 20 points to lead
The University of South Dakota women's basketball teamto a 67-53 victory over Seattle on Sunday afternoon in the DakotaDome.
The Coyotes improved to 6-6 and recorded their first-ever win over Seattle.
Iverson (Yankton, S.D.) connected on 8-of-12 shots from the field, including knocking down three treys, while sophomore forward Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) added 14 points and senior center Jasmine Mosley (Bellevue, Neb.) had 11. Junior guard Abby Kinder (Granger, Ind.) grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds and earned five assists to lead USD in both categories.
Seattle posted an early 6-3 lead, but the Redhawks went cold from the field, thanks to persistent Coyote defense, and made one of their next 12 shots. USD capitalized with a 12-0 spurt thanks to four points apiece from Hegge and Iverson and took a 15-6 advantage midway through the period.
SU broke the run with a basket at the 9:18 mark, but three straight treys from Kinder, Iverson and sophomore guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) put the Coyote lead at 24-8 with 7:19 left in the first.
The two squads traded baskets for the next four minutes until Seattle closed the period with a 7-0 run to cut USD's halftime lead to 32-22. Iverson posted 14 points in the first half, while Roche chipped in five and Hegge and Mosley had four apiece. Kinder added three assists. USD hit 54 percent (13-of-24) in the first half while holding SU to 36 percent (9-of-25).
The Redhawks closed the gap to 34-26 in the first two minutes, but Iverson converted an old-fashion three-point play with a basket and free throw to put the Coyotes back up by double digits. Hegge earned back-to-back buckets, but Seattle crafted a five-point spurt to close within 41-37 at the 12:20 mark.
Once again the squads exchanged baskets over the next five minutes, until Hegge and Mosley knocked down buckets to put USD up 50-41 with 6:17 left.
A trey from Kinder extended the advantage and Mosley added to it with a basket and free throw to allow USD to maintain at least an eight-point advantage the final four minutes.
A three-point play by Roche followed by a three by Iverson pushed the Coyote lead to 62-48 with 2:19 left, and USD rolled from there to its sixth win of 2009-10.
Roche and Kinder had nine points each for USD. Roche had three assists and led with two steals. Hegge had six rebounds.
South Dakota opens the Great West Conference portion of its schedule against North Dakota at 6 p.m. on Saturday in the DakotaDome.
