Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota women's soccer team was within 1-0 at halftime but Utah Valley added two more goals in the second half to record a 3-0 win over the Coyotes in Great West Conference action Sunday in Vermillion, S.D.
USD (4-10-2, 1-4-0 GWC) battled tough for much of the contest but was unable to break through against the Wolverines (9-7-1, 5-0-0 GWC), who have already clinched the GWC's West Division title.
The Coyotes had a good chance early in the game after Utah Valley got on the board at the 11:04 mark. Senior Michelle Marshall (West Des Moines, Iowa) fired a shot that deflected off Utah Valley goalkeeper Lauren Sack's hands and eventually bounced off the crossbar, barely missing a goal.
USD kept the game close throughout the first half and was within 1-0 at halftime.
The game stayed that way through the first 15 minutes of the second half when Utah Valley's Katey Turner scored to push the UVU lead to 2-0. Less than two minutes later, the Wolverines added another goal to make the game 3-0.
Senior Jen Ogren (Raymore, Mo.) had 11 saves in net for USD.
Marshall led USD with four shots, including three on goal, while freshman Laura Ekeren (Yankton, S.D.) added three shots, including one on goal. Senior Katie Quinones (Rochester, Minn.) and freshman Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.) each had two shots for the Coyotes.
The Coyotes will wrap up the regular season at home on Friday, Oct. 29 at home against North Dakota. Game time is 3 p.m. at the USD Soccer Field.
Notes: USD honored its seven seniors as part of Senior Day activities. Honored were Savanna Lokkesmoe (Maple Grove, Minn.), Marshall, Erika Menning (George, Iowa), Ogren, Quinones, Irma Reyes (Garden City, Kan.) and Sarah Wheeler (Duluth, Minn.)...USD is tied for third with Houston Baptist in the GWC West Division with a 1-4 record. Utah Valley has clinched the division with a 5-0 record, with North Dakota at 3-2. The finish in the division will determine the seedings for the GWC tournament in November.
