VERMILLION, S.D. -- Sophomore Tempestt Wilson scored 18 points and junior
Annie Roche added 11 as the South Dakota women's basketball team rolled past Jamestown, 76-37, in its home opener Wednesday night in Vermillion, S.D.
Wilson (Elk River, Minn.), who finished with season-highs in points and field goals, finished 6-of-10 from the field in the game. Roche (Vermillion, S.D.), who scored all 11 of her points in the first half, added two steals and two assists as well.
Junior Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) had a solid all-around game for the Coyotes (2-1) with six points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Sophomore Pam January (Richfield, Minn.) had a career-high nine points off the bench, while redshirt freshman McKayla Knudson (South Sioux City, Neb.) added eight points, also a career-high. Ten of the 12 Coyotes who played in the game scored.
The Coyotes opened the game on a 10-0 run in the first 2:08, with Wilson providing five points, Roche three and junior Jackie Hiebert (Maple Grove, Minn.) two.
By the time the first media timeout arrived at the 15:52 mark, the Coyote lead grew to 14-2, with Wilson accounting for nine points herself on 3-for-3 shooting.
The Coyotes continued to apply the pressure offensively, pushing the lead to 31-6 after a three-point play from Roche with 8:52 left in the first half. Wilson (11 points) and Roche (10 points) combined for 21 of the Coyotes' first 31 points.
That advantage grew to 33-6 moments later on a layup by Boss as the Coyotes were on their way to a 38-18 halftime lead.
Wilson and Roche were the catalysts in the first half offensively for South Dakota with 11 points each, while Knudson, Boss and sophomore Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) had four points apiece.
South Dakota shot 47.1 percent in the first half while holding the Jimmies to just 16.7 percent shooting.
The Coyotes steadily pulled away in the second half, opening on a 20-8 run over the first 11:24 of the frame to push the lead to 58-26 and never looked back from that point.
The Coyotes shot 45.6 percent for the game but also held Jamestown to just 20 percent shooting.
Freshman Stacia Robertson (Grand Island, Neb.) had a career-high eight points off the bench for South Dakota while senior Teresa Case (Sioux Falls, S.D.) added seven. Yackley led with four assists. Yackley, Boss, Roche, Wilson and Case each shared the team lead with two steals.
The Coyotes resume action Saturday at the Subway Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota. South Dakota opens against Dayton at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Minneapolis.
