Balance Helps Coyote Women Roll Past Tabor, 87-43

Vermillion, S.D. - Five South Dakota players scored in double figures to lead the Coyote women's basketball team to an 87-43 win over Tabor College Monday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.

Junior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) and junior forward Jackie Hiebert (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the team with 13 points each. Freshman forward Stacia Robertson (Grand Island, Neb.) tied a career-high of 12 points and junior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) contributed a double-double --- her third of 2010-11 and second straight -- with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) added 10 points and a team-high six assists.

USD (7-5) quickly jumped out to a double-digit lead thanks to a 6-of-8 start from the field, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, while Tabor (4-9) hit just one of its first seven shots. Roche, sophomore guard Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) and sophomore guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) connected on their first three-pointer attempts and junior forward Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) and Roche added layups to put USD up 15-5. Robertson scored eight of South Dakota's next 11 points to spark a 24-0 run through the midway point, as USD's defense held the Bluejays scoreless for more than 10 minutes.

The two squads exchanged baskets over the final minutes of the half to send USD into the locker room with a 35-point lead at 49-14. Robertson led the team with 10 points and six rebounds in the first half, while Yackley and Roche contributed eight points each. USD shot 48 percent (18-of-37) from the field and 46 percent (7-of-15) from three in the first half, and held Tabor to 16 percent (5-of-30) and 25 percent (2-of-8). USD outscored the Bluejays 20-4 in the paint during the half.

"The kids did what they needed to do," South Dakota head coach Ryun Williams said after the game. "It was just about playing Coyote basketball for 40 minutes."

USD maintained its lead through the second half, extending it to as many as 44 several times through the frame, and cruised from there. Boss added eight points and five rebounds and Hiebert contributed six points in the second half to lead the Coyotes to the victory.

Eleven of the 12 Coyotes who saw time scored. South Dakota also had a commanding 55-30 edge on the board, including 19-7 on the offensive glass. Freshman Katelyn Edwards (Crete, Neb.) and sophomore Sam Mehr (Apple Valley, Minn.) each contributed seven rebounds, a career-high for both.

South Dakota continues its season by hosting Cal State-Northridge on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the DakotaDome. Fans can purchase tickets in advance at the USD Ticket Office or by calling (605) 677-5959.
