Vermillion, S.D. -- The South Dakota women's basketball team held Wichita State to just 36 percent shooting and forced 18 turnovers in a 57-47 win over the Shockers in nonconference action Sunday at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D. The win capped off a 3-1 homestand for the Coyotes (5-4).
Defense proved crucial for the Coyotes in Sunday's win. The Coyotes scored 20 points off of Shocker turnovers, and also finished with 10 blocked shots, keyed by seven by junior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.), who tied a single-game school-record she set earlier this season.
Junior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) and sophomore guard Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) added nine points each. Freshman forward Stacia Robertson (Grand Island, Neb.) added eight points and five rebounds off the bench for South Dakota. Boss, in addition to her seven blocks, had six points, six rebounds and a game-high three steals.
The Coyotes held a 21-17 lead at halftime after the two teams combined to shoot only 34 percent from the field in the first half. South Dakota held the Shockers (4-3) to just 30.8 percent shooting in the first half. Roche had five points in the first half for the Coyotes while Wilson and Robertson had four each.
In the second half, the Coyotes warmed up from the field, while at the same time, continuing their defensive intensity. They outscored Wichita State 18-7 over the first 8:38 of the second half to build a 39-24 lead with 11:22 left. Hegge had seven points during that run, while Robertson had four. Sophomore guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) drained a big three-pointer during that sequence as well.
From there, the Coyotes remained in control. The Shockers were within 48-41 with 5:11 left but got no closer as South Dakota clinched the win.
Yackley led South Dakota with four assists.
South Dakota resumes action on the road Tuesday at Northern Iowa. Game time is 7 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa. It will be the third straight foe from the Missouri Valley Conference for the Coyotes.
Notes: It was the first win over Wichita State for the Coyotes...The Coyotes shot 15-of-25 from the free-throw line, compared to just 3-of-5 for Wichita... South Dakota had nine steals as a team, as seven different players recording at least one steal. Nine of the 11 Coyote players who saw time scored in the game.
