Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota women's soccer team capped off its six-game homestand with a 2-1 win over Eastern Washington in nonconference action Friday at the USD Soccer Field.
USD (3-4-1) concluded the homestand with a 3-3 record. The Coyotes will play their next seven games on the road.
USD controlled play for much of the game before fending off a late Eastern Washington rally.
Sophomore Rachel Greene (Onalaska, Wis.) got the Coyotes on the board first with just over five minutes elapsed in the game. Greene took a pass from freshman Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and scored to give USD a 1-0 lead.
The game stayed that way until halftime and into the opening minutes of the second half. That's when USD extended the lead to 2-0 when Teslow broke free and scored at the 54:02 mark.
USD maintained that lead much of the rest of the way before Eastern Washington (0-5-1) scored with just under 12 minutes left to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Coyotes held off the rally, however, and recorded the win, avenging a 5-1 loss to EWU from 2009.
USD also benefited from two key defensive plays in front of the net by freshmen Kerry Grogan (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Tayler Henderson (Keller, Texas), both of whom deflected shots to thwart Eastern Washington scoring opportunities.
Senior Jen Ogren (Raymore, Mo.) finished with 10 saves in the game to help USD to the win.
Teslow and freshman Afton Keiser (Sioux Falls, S.D.) each had three shots (including two on goal) for USD.
The Coyotes get back into action on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at in-state rival South Dakota State in the first meeting between the two program since 2003. Game time is 6 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.
