Hegge and Roche Propel South Dakota Women Past HBU, 62-33

Vermillion, S.D. -- Junior forward Amber Hegge recorded another double-double to propel the South Dakota women's basketball team past Houston Baptist 62-33 in Great West Conference action. Hegge finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Coyotes (11-9, 2-1 Great West), who won for the second straight time.

It is the second time in her career that Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) has recorded back-to-back double-doubles. Hegge had 21 points and 12 rebounds in the Coyotes' win over Utah Valley on Jan. 22. Junior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Coyotes, while sophomore Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) added 10 points. Nine of the 10 Coyote players who saw time scored.

USD finished the game shooting 33 percent (20-of-60) from the field and 40 percent (9-of-22) from treys while holding HBU to 26 percent (13-of-49) and 10 percent (2-of-20). The Coyote bench outscored the Huskies' 14-0 and USD scored 21 second-chance points, compared to HBU's five. The 33 points surrendered by the Coyote defense were a season low.

The Coyotes started the game with four consecutive three-point possessions, the first a three-point play by Wilson. Sophomore guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) followed with a three and Roche drained two in a row to help the Coyotes earn an early 12-6 lead. The Coyotes then scored nine of the next 13 points to extend the lead to 21-10 with 10 minutes left in the half. Hegge and freshman guard Katelyn Edwards (Crete, Neb.) each drained a three during that stretch.

South Dakota continued to build the lead. Consecutive threes by Roche and Yackley put the Coyotes up 33-16 with 1:30 remaining as the Coyotes took a 35-16 lead into the break.

USD finished the first half at 33 percent (10-of-30) from the field and 43 percent (7-of-16) from deep. The Coyotes held the Huskies to 26 percent (7-of-26) and no threes (0-of-10). USD outrebounded HBU 22-17 and forced seven turnovers. Roche led the Coyotes with nine points, all from treys, and six rebounds in the first half.

USD started the second half on an 8-0 run, with four coming from Hegge, to push the lead to 43-16 with 16:13 left in the contest. The Coyotes led by as many as 32 points in the second on their way to the win.

Robertson and sophomore forward Pam January (Richfield, Minn.) had five rebounds apiece. Hegge and Yackley led with three assists.
