Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. - Northern Iowa scored two first half goals en route to a 2-0 win over South Dakota in nonconference women's soccer Monday afternoon at the USD Soccer Field in Vermillion, S.D.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 2:02 into the contest as Melissa Hagan took a pass from Claire Clark off a Coyote turnover and Hagan chipped a ball over Coyote goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor (Fort Collins, Colo.)
The Coyotes continued to fight hard and had a good chance as sophomore Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.) had a fast break, one-on-one with Panther keeper Erin Zaideman. Teslow fired the shot, but a diving Zaideman was up to the challenge preventing the score 13 minutes in.
UNI added its second goal at the 28:17 mark in the first half on an own goal.
The Panthers held the 2-0 lead at halftime as they outshot the Coyotes 11-2 in the opening period and had a 3-0 lead in corner kicks. Viktor had four saves in the opening half for the Coyotes.
South Dakota outshot the Panthers 9-3 in the second half including three on goal, but was unable to come up with a score. Freshman Kylee Willer (Fort Collins, Colo.) led the team with three shots on goal, while Teslow had two shots on goal. The Coyotes had 11 shots for the game and five on goal.
South Dakota continues its homestand this week as South Dakota State visits on Friday at 4 p.m. and North Dakota State comes to town Sunday at 1 p.m.
