Box Score VERMILLION, S.D. - The South Dakota women's soccer team was within 1-0 going into the final 25 minutes but South Dakota State added a key insurance goal to record a 2-0 win over the Coyotes in Summit League action Friday night in Vermillion, S.D.
The Coyotes (1-4-1 Summit) battled tough in the first meeting between the two in-state rivals since 2003. SDSU held just a 16-12 edge in shots, but South Dakota had a 6-5 edge in the second half.
Junior Erin Bello (Fort Collins, Colo.) led the Coyotes with four shots, including two shots on goal, while freshmen Rebecca Pederson (Waconia, Minn.) and Lauren Bennett (Walton, Ky.) had two shots each, including one on goal. Freshmen Kaiti Porter (Prior Lake, Minn.) and Laura Buckman (Yankton, S.D.) also had shots on goal for South Dakota.
Freshman goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor (Fort Collins, Colo.) had six saves in net for the Coyotes, including five in the first half.
The Coyotes held the Jackrabbits to just one goal despite an early barrage of shots by the Jackrabbits, who are just a half-game behind North Dakota State for first place in the Summit League. South Dakota was within 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, the Coyotes had some scoring opportunities but were not able to find the back of the net. SDSU's second goal came in the 68th minute, giving the Jackrabbits a 2-0 lead.
The Coyotes appeared to cut the lead to one goal as sophomore Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.) appeared to score with less than two minutes left. However, an offsides call wiped out that goal.
South Dakota wraps up its home season on Sunday against first-place North Dakota State. The game begins at 1 p.m. at the USD Soccer Field.
