Jodie Boss set a new South Dakota career record for blocked shots and also tied the single-game record with seven to lead the Coyote women's basketball team to a 73-48 rout of Northern Colorado in nonconference action Saturday night in Vermillion, S.D. The Coyotes improved to 6-2 on the year with the win, while the Bears fell to 5-4.
Boss (Columbus, Neb.) had seven blocks in the game and now has 136 for her career. The previous record of 134 was held by Jean Misterek. Boss also had an excellent day offensively, scoring 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while adding three assists.
Four Coyotes, including Boss, scored in double figures in the game. Senior forward Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) had 21 points and seven rebounds, while senior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) had 16 points and three assists. Junior guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) had a double-double with 11 points and 11 assists, just one away from a career-high.
The Coyotes shot 50 percent from the field, hitting 28-of-56 attempts, while holding Northern Colorado to just 34.7 percent shooting (17-of-49). South Dakota also had a commanding edge in rebounding at 38-21, with junior guard Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) pulling down a team-high nine rebounds.
South Dakota began pulling away shortly after the midway point of the first half. The Coyotes led 21-19, but a three by Roche sparked a 19-8 run over the final 8:18 of the half that helped South Dakota take a 40-27 lead into the break.
Hegge had 11 points and Boss had 10 in the first half for South Dakota, which shot 51.7 percent from the field.
South Dakota's defense held Northern Colorado without a point for more than six minutes, a stretch that started late in the first half and continued through the second. The Coyotes opened the second half on a 19-4 run over the first 7:53 of the half to build a commanding 59-31 lead with 12:07 left. Hegge had eight points during that run while Roche had six on a pair of threes.
South Dakota built its largest lead of the night at 70-39 when Roche hit a jumper with 5:20 left, and from there, the Coyotes rolled to the 25-point win.
Roche finished the night 4-of-8 from three-point range, while Yackley was 3-for-4. Hegge also had four blocks. The Coyotes finished the game with 25 assists.
South Dakota takes some time away from competition this week for final exams before resuming on Dec. 19 at Utah Valley for a nonconference game. Game time is 4 p.m. Central in Orem, Utah.
