South Dakota Women Fall at Chicago State, 72-54; Hegge Hits Milestone in Defeat

Chicago, Ill. -- Junior Amber Hegge reached the 1,000-point milestone for her career, but it wasn't enough as the South Dakota women's basketball team fell to first-place Chicago State, 72-54 in a Great West Conference matchup Thursday night in Chicago, Ill. The loss ended four-game winning streak for the Coyotes (13-10, 4-2 GWC), while Chicago State improved to 17-8 overall and 8-0 in the Great West.

Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) entered the game needing five points to reach the 1,000 plateau - the 19th Coyote women's player to accomplish the feat -- and finished Thursday with eight points. She also added a team-high five rebounds; she is now two away from 500 for her career. Hegge also led with four assists.

Freshman Stacia Robertson (Grand Island, Neb.) scored a career-high 14 points for the Coyotes, while sophomore guards Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) and Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) each collected 12.

South Dakota took a 25-20 lead into halftime after a solid first half, where the Coyotes held the Cougars to just 29.6 percent shooting. The Coyotes started off quickly, taking a 21-9 lead during the game's first 13:47. Yackley had seven points during that stretch while Wilson had six; both players hit two 3-pointers during that early run.

The Coyotes opened by hitting four of their first six 3-point field goals and at the same time, held Chicago State to just four made field goals on their first 19 attempts.

Chicago State ended the half on an 11-4 run to cut the gap to 25-20 at the break. Yackley sparked the Coyote offense with first-half nine points; Robertson and Wilson each contributed six. South Dakota shot 39 percent (9-of-23) in the first half, while holding Chicago State to just 29.6 percent (8-of-27) in the opening frame. Chicago State was 1-of-10 from three in the first half.

In the second half, Chicago State came back to tie the game at 33-33 with 14:34 left. Wilson hit a three-pointer to put the Coyotes up 38-37 with 13:14 left, but the Cougars seized the momentum over the next seven minutes, going on a 23-4 run to take a 60-42 lead with 6:20 left. South Dakota closed within 63-49 with 3:44 left on a layup by junior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) but was unable to close the gap further.

Chicago State shot 49.2 percent (30-of-61) for the game, including 64.7 percent in the second half. The Coyotes shot 46.3 percent (19-of-41) for the contest but also finished with 26 turnovers.

Roche, Robertson and junior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) each finished with four rebounds for South Dakota. Sophomore Sam Mehr (Apple Valley, Minn.) and Yackley had three assists each.
