Bakersfield, Calif. -- Junior guard Annie Roche scored a career-high 23 points, but the South Dakota women's basketball team was defeated by Cal State-Bakersfield, 90-64, in the second round of the Women's Basketball Invitational Sunday night in Bakersfield, Calif. The loss ended the season for the Coyotes, who finished the year 20-12.

Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) finished 8-of-13 from the field, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Junior Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) added 17 points and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) added 13 points.

The Coyotes shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field, including 42.9 percent (9-of-21) from three-point range, while the Roadrunners (21-11) shot 44 percent (33-of-75) from the field, including 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from three-point range. CSUB's biggest advantage, however, was in points off of turnovers, as they had 31 points off of turnovers compared to just five for the Coyotes.

"This was a tough night for us against a really good team," South Dakota head coach Ryun Williams said. "They had a ton of energy. It was just one of those games. Bakersfield is a solid team. We battled; it just wasn't in the cards tonight."

South Dakota started the game on a 7-2 spurt, keyed by a three-pointer from Wilson. The Roadrunners answered with a 12-2 run to take a 14-9 lead with 13:03 left in the first half. Wilson drained another three to put the Coyotes up 22-19, but the Roadrunners closed the half on a 23-11 run to take a 42-33 lead into halftime. Roche paced the Coyotes with 10 points while Hegge andWilson had eight each.

The Coyotes shot 41.4 percent (12-of-29) in the first half, compared to 40.5 (17-of-42) for Bakersfield. The Coyotes did hit 50 percent (6-of-12) from three-point range in the first half.

Wilson hit a three-pointer to bring the Coyotes within 42-36 with 18:59 left, but a 9-0 run pushed Bakersfield's lead to 51-36 with 16:37 left. South Dakota was within 51-39 after a three by Roche with 16:23 left but got no closer, as Bakersfield went on a 16-4 run over the next five minutes to pull away.

Junior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) added seven rebounds and two blocks, while sophomore guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) led with four assists.

The Coyotes' future is looking bright, as the team will graduate just one senior \(point guard Teresa Case) from a 20-12 team.

"This game is no indication of the year we had," Williams said. "It was a very solid year. We have a lot to be proud of."
