Robertson Powers Coyote Women Past Houston Baptist, 66-48

Houston, Texas -- Freshman forward Stacia Robertson had the best game of her career with career-highs of 20 points and 14 rebounds to lead the South Dakota women's basketball team to a 66-48 win over Houston Baptist in Great West Conference action Saturday in Houston, Texas. The Coyotes' sixth straight win clinched the No. 2 seed in the Great West Conference tournament, which begins Wednesday in Orem, Utah.

Robertson (Grand Island, Neb.) recorded her second double-double of the season and finished 8-of-13 from the field in the game.

The Coyotes' three post players, led by Robertson's 20, combined for 45 points in the game. Junior forward Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists, while junior center Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) added 12 points, three blocks and three steals.

"Stacia played really well tonight, in a game where we needed her to play well," South Dakota head coach Ryun Williams said. "She showed how special she's going to be. We got a lot of points out of our post players tonight."

Sophomore guard Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) added five points and five assists. The Coyotes (19-10, 10-2 GWC) shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field, compared to 34 percent (18-of-53) for Houston Baptist. The Coyotes had a 42-30 edge in rebounds in the contest.

South Dakota trailed 5-3 early but scored nine straight points to take a 12-5 lead just 3:23 to the game. Hegge had four points during that stretch while sophomore guard Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) drained a three and Boss added a basket.

HBU came back to take a 14-13 lead and led by as many as four at 23-19 after a Destini Texada basket with 7:33 left. The Coyotes ended the half on a 15-4 run, however, to take a 34-27 lead into the break. Robertson had seven points during that run while Boss had four as the Coyote inside game got rolling.

South Dakota shot 46 percent (13-of-28) in the first half, compared to 38 percent (10-of-26) for Houston Baptist. The Coyotes' inside game was effective in the first half, with Hegge scoring nine points in the first half while Boss had eight and Robertson seven. Wilson scored all eight of her points in the first half.

Houston Baptist cut the lead to 36-32 early in the second half but the Coyotes pulled away from there, going on a 10-2 run to stretch the lead to 46-34. Robertson converted a three-point play and Yackley drained a three to spark the run.

South Dakota built its biggest lead at 58-39 after junior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) drained a pair of free throws and cruised to the win from there.

Ironically, the two teams will meet again on March 9 in Orem, Utah at the Great West Conference Championship. South Dakota is the No. 2 seed while Houston Baptist is the No. 7 seed.
