BROOKINGS, S.D.-- After 89 minutes of scoreless soccer SDSU's Diana Potterveld found the back of the net with 28 seconds remaining in regulation to give South Dakota State the lead in a tight match against in-state rival South Dakota at Fishback Soccer Park in Brookings, S.D.
Potterveld's goal came off a corner kick that the Coyotes were unable to clear. The Jack's forward was able to get a handle on the loose ball and score the game winner, her fifth goal of the season.
"It is never fun to lose in the last 30 seconds of a game," said head coach Mandy Green. "SDSU put a good amount of pressure on us in the last 10 minutes and we need to do a better job of handling that pressure next game."
USD's (2-12-3, 1-5-1 Summit League) Teagan Eberle (Schaumburg, Ill.), Jenny Teslow (Sioux Falls, S.D.), Erin Bello (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Danielle Anderson (Elkhorn, Neb.) all threatened goal with on-target shots but SDSU (5-9-2, 3-3-1 Summit League) goalkeeper Tina Ehrett was in position to stop all four attempts and maintain a clean sheet.
"All in all this was a good weekend for us," said Green. "It is a tough task to have to play NDSU and SDSU in the same weekend away from home. We gave ourselves a chance to win in both games because we played pretty well, our goalkeeping is getting better and we are making a lot fewer mistakes."
The Coyotes will return to the USD Soccer Complex for their final game of the season against Kansas City. Game time is 1 p.m. Saturday.
