Boss Sets Single-Game Blocked Shots Record in Coyote Women's 52-42 Loss at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Senior center Jodie Boss set a single-game record with nine blocked shots, but the South Dakota women's basketball team couldn't overcome a tough night offensively in a 52-42 loss at Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis Saturday night in Indianapolis, Ind. The loss ended an eight-game winning streak for the Coyotes (18-7, 9-6 Summit League), while IUPUI (12-15, 7-8) won for the fourth time in six games.

The Coyotes set a new team record for blocks in a game with 16 in the contest, breaking the previous mark of 13 set in 1989. Boss, (Columbus, Neb.) the blocked shots career record holder, broke the single-game record she has set several times of seven with nine blocks, which are tied for the sixth-most in a single game in the NCAA this season.

Offensively, the Coyotes struggled much of the night. They committed a season-high 25 turnovers - leading to 20 IUPUI points - and shot just 26.9 percent (14-of-52) from the field, including just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from three-point range.

"There was some hesitant play offensively. That was more disappointing than the shooting," South Dakota head coach Ryun Williams said. "We have had a hard time scoring of late, and we knew it was going to catch up to us at some point. Tonight was that night."

Junior Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) paced the Coyotes with 11 points and five steals. She also added nine rebounds, tying a career-high. Freshman Kelly Stewart (Amery, Wis.) added 10 points off the bench. Boss had 10 rebounds to go with her career-high nine blocks; she also had six points, two assists and two steals. Senior Amber Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) had 10 rebounds, five assists and five blocks but was held to a season-low five points.

The Coyote defense controlled the first 10 minutes, holding the Jaguars to just 2-of-15 shooting (16.3 percent) to open the game. South Dakota opened the game with a 7-0 run over the first 3:58, thanks to four points from Yackley and a three from Hegge.

IUPUI cut the lead to 10-7, but junior Tempestt Wilson (Elk River, Minn.) drained a three to push the lead back to 13-7 with 10:04 left in the half.

A Boss layup put the Coyotes up 15-9 with 8:48 left in the half but from there, the South Dakota offense endured a scoring drought of more than seven minutes. A layup by Hegge broke the dry spell with 1:45 left in the half and pushed the Coyotes back in front, 17-16. During the Coyotes' scoreless stretch, IUPUI managed just eight points but was able to take the lead at 17-16.

After Hegge's layup, Yackley drained a three to push the Coyote lead to 20-16 with 1:18 left in the half. South Dakota took a 20-18 lead into halftime.

The Coyotes shot just 28 percent (7-of-25) in the first half but held IUPUI to just 19 percent (6-of-31) shooting. Turnovers hurt the Coyotes in the first half as South Dakota committed 13. Yackley paced the offense with seven points, while Hegge had five and Stewart and Wilson each hit threes.

In the second half, the Coyotes held a 25-24 lead after Roche drained a three with 17:05 left. IUPUI scored the next eight points, however, to take a 32-25 lead with 14:30 left. Hegge picked up her fourth foul with 14:43 left and spent almost the next three minutes on the bench.

IUPUI extended the lead to double digits at 44-33 after a Nevena Markovic three-pointer with 9:10 left.

The Coyotes cut the lead down to 47-40 with 5:03 left when Stewart drained her second three of the night. South Dakota had four shots to cut into that seven-point lead over the next three minutes but was unable to do so.

"We had some looks there at 47-40," Williams said. "We had three or four possessions with really good looks to dig into that lead and we just came up empty."

The Coyotes were unable to get closer than seven the rest of the way.

Senior guard Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) added seven points for the Coyotes.

The Coyotes will play their final Summit League road game of the regular season Monday at Western Illinois. Game time is 7 p.m. Central time in Macomb, Ill.
