VERMILLION, S.D. - Senior
Amber Hegge recorded her 10th double-double of the season to lead the South Dakota women's basketball team to a 70-56 win over Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne in Summit League action Monday night in Vermillion, S.D. With their 11th win in 12 games, South Dakota clinched third place in the Summit League and improved to 21-7 overall and 12-6 in the league, while IPFW fell to 9-20 and 6-12 in the league.
Hegge (Crofton, Neb.) finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds, and also added four assists. Senior Annie Roche (Vermillion, S.D.) added 12 points, while freshman Kelly Stewart (Amery, Wis.) added six points and five rebounds off the bench. Senior Jodie Boss (Columbus, Neb.) added five points, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
The Coyotes held IPFW to 38.3 percent (18-of-47) shooting. South Dakota shot 43.2 percent (19-of-44) from the field, but hit 26-of-32 free throws (81.3 percent).
The Coyotes broken open a one-point game (11-10) with a key 8-0 run to push the lead to 19-10 with 10:08 left in the first half. Stewart had four points during that run, while Hegge and junior Pam January (Richfield, Minn.) each added two. It was January's layup with 10:08 left that pushed the lead to nine.
The Coyote lead grew to 26-14 - their largest of the half - when Roche drained a three-pointer with 3:15 left in the half. IPFW cut the lead to eight in the final minute but a jumper by Boss, followed by a three by Roche in the closing seconds pushed the lead to 33-20, which was the halftime score. The Coyotes shot 42.3 percent (11-of-26) in the opening half, compared to 29.2 percent (7-of-24) for IPFW.
South Dakota never led the lead drop below seven points the rest of the way. The lead grew to 52-36 with 8:11 left when Hegge hit a jumper in the paint, and the Coyotes led by as many as 18 on their way to the win.
Junior Alexis Yackley (Onida, S.D.) added five points and four assists, while freshman Ashley Olson (Blue Earth, Minn.) had five points on 5-of-6 free-throw shooting off the bench.
South Dakota wraps up the regular-season with a nonconference game against SIU Edwardsville (18-9) on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion, S.D.
Notes: The Coyotes are now 14-1 at home this season...Hegge finished with 11 games of 20 points or more during 18 Summit League games this season. She averaged 19.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game in conference play this year...The Coyotes finished one game ahead of UMKC for third place in the standings. They were picked seventh in the preseason poll.
