VERMILLION, S.D. - South Dakota sophomore Katie Wetzstein led the USD women's cross country team to the team title by winning the women's 5k while the USD men's team placed four in the top-10 in the 8k at the Tim Young Invitational held at the Don Baker Cross Country Course on Saturday.
Wetzstein's time of 18 minutes, 3.18 seconds is the second fastest USD time at the course since 2000, only behind Ramsey Fitzsimmons' mark of 17:44.20 set in 2008. Megan Hilson placed second in 18:09.12 and Amber Eichkorn was fourth in 18:31.50 to round out the USD women's top-five finishers.
Kate Kaster finished sixth in 18:36.87 and Jilanne Doom finished 10th in 19:16.61 to complete USD's scoring.
The USD women took the team title by finishing with 23 points. Nebraska was second with 32 points and Chicago State was third with 85 points.
In the men's race, Mubarik Musa led the Coyote men by finishing third in 25:08.62 while teammate Brant Haase finished fourth in 25:09.47. Nebraska's Jeff Olson won the 8k race with a time of 25:01.31.
Taylor Chapman finished seventh in 25:12.76, Jeff Mettler was 10th in 25:52.75 and Isaac Allen was 12th in 25:59.74 to round out USD's scorers.
Nebraska won the men's team title with a score of 22 points. USD was second with 34 points, Buena Vista placed third with 92 and Chicago State finished fourth with 105.
South Dakota will next compete at the Mount Marty Invitational in Yankton on Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
