FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - South Dakota women's cross country finished 17th and the men's team finished 22nd at the Roy Griak Invitational ran at the Les Bolstad Golf Course and hosted by Minnesota on Saturday. It was the first meet for the Coyotes since running at the Bison Open in Fargo on Aug. 30.
The Coyote women finished with 472 points, and beat several regional competitors such as Iowa (21st), South Dakota State (23rd), Nebraska (24th), and Drake (25th). Megan Hilson was the women's top finisher, placing 65th out of 300 in the 6k race with a time of 22 minutes, 18 seconds. That time is a USD senior record and is the second fastest USD time recorded at the Les Bolstad Golf Course behind Ramsey Fitzsimmons' 22:09 in 2007.
The USD women's next three scorers finished within three seconds of each other. Katie Wetzstein placed 89th in 22:33, Amber Eichkorn was 90th in 22:34, and Kate Kaster was 93rd in 22:36. Britni Waller finished the women's scoring by placing 135th in 23:12.
The men's team, which ran an 8k, finished with 631 points and was led by Mubarik Musa's 66th place finish in 25:30. Taylor Huseman was 136th in 26:26, Taylor Chapman was 137th in 26:28, Isaac Allen was 143rd in 26:48 and Brant Haase was 149th in 27:07. There were 246 competitors in the men's race.
Jeff Mettler, last season's Summit League Indoor Men's Track and Field Championship MVP, ran his first race of the season and finished 153rd in 27:12.
Brigham Young won the men's team title with 62 points and Arizona won the women's title with 48 points.
The Coyotes will compete again Friday at the South Dakota State Classic in Brookings. That meet is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.
