VERMILLION, S.D.—North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz threw three touchdowns and running back John Crockett added 123 yards and a score on the ground as the top-ranked Bison defeated South Dakota 47-7 Saturday at the DakotaDome.
It was the 32nd consecutive win for the three-time defending champions (8-0, 4-0 MVFC) who were making their first trip to Vermillion since 2002.
Wentz completed 14 of 26 passes for 231 yards. Freshman wide receiver RJ Urzendowski hauled in four catches for 107 yards including a 27-yard touchdown catch early in the third quarter that extended the Bison's lead to 30-7.
South Dakota (2-6, 0-4) scored on a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin Earl to Riley Donovan with 35 seconds left in the first half that made it 20-7. Earl was 14 of 28 for 104 yards. Donovan had three catches 20 yards.
The Bison got a 49-yard field goal from Adam Keller on the final play of the first half to make it 23-7. Keller also booted two 23-yard field goals and a 21 yarder.
North Dakota State forced three turnovers that led to 14 points and limited the Coyotes to 243 yards of offense. Linebacker Nick DeLuca had a game-high 12 tackles and intercepted Earl on the third play of the second half. Junior cornerback CJ Smith also had an interception and was credited with three breakups.
Jasper Sanders carried 23 times for 67 yards to lead the Coyotes. Jordan Roberts added 32 yards on five totes. Eric Shufford caught four passes for a team-high 41 yards.
