VERMILLION, S.D.—Junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor recorded nine saves in South Dakota's scoreless tie with Omaha on Friday at the USD Soccer Complex in Vermillion. The game opened Summit League play for both teams as winds gusted up to 33 miles per hour.
Viktor's crucial save came in the 98th minute as Marquette Pick of Omaha headed the ball towards the goal off of a free kick. Viktor punched the ball up and behind the goal to hold the tie.
South Dakota (7-4-1, 0-0-1 Summit) led Omaha (2-8-1, 0-0-1 Summit) in total shots 18-13. Junior Danielle Anderson had seven of the Coyotes shots, followed by junior Taylor Nivala with four. Nivala nearly recorded the game-winning goal for the Coyotes with four seconds left in the first overtime period, but the ball hit the crossbar and bounced out of bounds as the clock ran out.
South Dakota will continue Summit League play against Fort Wayne on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at the USD Soccer Complex.
