MACOMB, Ill.--South Dakota netted three goals in a second-half rally to climb out of a four goal deficit to Western Illinois, ending the Coyotes' season with a 4-3 loss to the Leathernecks at John Mackenzie Field on Sunday afternoon.
Western Illinois (5-12-1, 4-3-1 Summit League) used the strong winds to its advantage in the first half of play and scored all four of its goals in the 45-minute span. The Leathernecks' Sarah Hall scored her seventh and eighth goals of the season, while Skyler Jessop and Amy Bennett each recorded their second season goals.
After switching directions at half-time, South Dakota (9-8-2, 2-4-2 Summit League) put away three goals. The first goal was unassisted by redshirt-junior Megan Anderson in the 61st minute. Anderson beat three defenders, fought WIU goalkeeper Lexi Harris one-on-one and fired off a shot into the back of the net.
A true-freshman duo combined in the Coyotes' second goal-scoring play. Freshman Brittney Baker took a corner in the 73rd minute that bounced off a Leatherneck defender and then deflected off freshman Maddie Vang's heel into the goal.
The third goal began with a cross from senior Lauren Bennett in the outside corner in the 75th minute. Junior Rebecca Sparkman redirected the cross towards the goal with a header, but Harris made a save. Senior Kylee Willer got a touch off the goalkeeper's deflection before Sparkman crashed in and scored.
South Dakota recorded 29 shots, the second most this season behind the 36-shot effort and 11-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
South Dakota ends the season with nine wins, the program's highest since 2006.
