Final Stats
SEATTLE – Kelsey Plum scored 37 points to lead the Washington Huskies past the South Dakota women's basketball team 96-82 in Alaska Airlines Arena on Thursday night.
Plum shot 10-of-22 from the field, 5-for-9 from 3-point range and 12-for-15 from the charity stripe in the game. The Huskies (1-1) scored 54 points in the second half on 17-for-35 shooting (48.6 percent) to seal the game.
Outside of Plum, Jazmine Davis added 16 points and Aminah Williams tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kate Collier also reached double-figures with 10 points.
Four Coyotes (2-2) reached double-digit point totals with Nicole Seekamp's 19 leading the way. Seekamp became the 21st player in program history to score 1,000 career points when she scored her seventh point in the contest. Tia Hemiller and Kelly Stewart both had career-high scoring nights of 17 points and Raeshel Contreras added 10 points.
Forward Lisa Loeffler added a career-high 14 rebounds to the USD effort.
The Huskies outscored the Coyotes 32-16 in the paint and led by 23 with four minutes remaining in the contest. Both teams had the same rebound numbers (15 offensive and 28 defensive), but the Huskies doubled up the Coyotes in second chance points, 20-10.
South Dakota held Washington to no field goals over the final 5:20 of the game and had a 31-12 advantage in bench points.
USD scored the first three points of the game, but Washington scored the next nine and never trailed from then on. Despite trailing by nine points on three occasions in the half, USD closed the gap to two points (29-27) with 4:33 left before halftime. Washington responded with 13-6 run to enter the break with a 42-33 lead.
Hemiller was USD's top scorer in the first half with 12 points while Seekamp had nine at the break. Plum was UW's top scorer with 21 first half points.
Both teams had three players score at least 10 points in the second half. Plum tallied 16 points and Davis and Williams both added 10 for Washington, while Stewart tallied 11 points and Seekamp and Contreras both had 10 points for USD. The Coyotes were never able to close the lead to less than nine, but finished the game on a 9-0 run.
South Dakota will host UC Irvine in its home opener on Monday at 7 p.m.
