BROOKINGS, S.D.—South Dakota State quarterback Austin Sumner passed for a career-high 395 yards and three touchdowns to lead the 15th-ranked Jackrabbits to a 37-14 win against South Dakota Saturday at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in what was the final regular season game for both teams.
The result ties the all-time series between the two teams at 51-51-7. It is the first time the series has been tied since the first meeting in 1889.
South Dakota State (8-4, 5-3 MVFC) led 31-0 midway through the second quarter and never looked back. Sumner had thrown touchdown passes of 28 yards to Jason Schneider, 18 yards to Jake Wieneke and 50 yards to Zach Zenner by that point. Sumner completed 11 passes for 249 yards in the first half. He finished 16 of 28 and threw for the second-most yards in program history.
South Dakota (2-10, 0-8) scored on two 10-yard touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. Eric Shufford caught the first one from quarterback Kevin Earl with 10:34 to go. Ryan Saeger threw the second one to tight end Josh Hale with 2:10 remaining.
Earl completed 20 of 44 passes for 226 yards. Riley Donovan caught six passes for 94 yards. Shufford hauled in his team-leading fifth touchdown of the season and had six catches for 67 yards.
Adding to South Dakota's disappointment Saturday was a call on the field that cost South Dakota kicker Miles Bergner a spot in the FCS record book. Bergner entered the game 16-for-16 on field goal attempts and had his 25-yard attempt in the second quarter ruled wide right. Replays of the kick clearly show the football sailing inside the upright, but no official replay was in use for Saturday's game.
The FCS record for field goals made in a season without a miss is 15. Bergner finished 16 of 17. He had made 18 consecutive attempts dating back to last season.
South Dakota State held a 547-438 edge in total yards. Coyote fullback Drew Potter carried eight times for a career-high 103 yards to lead all rushers. Teammate Khorey Kilgore carried 17 times for 82 yards. Zach Zenner ran 18 times for 76 yards and a touchdown to lead the Jacks.
