Five reach double-figures in win over CSF

VERMILLION, S.D. – Five Coyotes reached double-digit point totals as the South Dakota women's basketball team won its fourth straight game by beating Cal State Fullerton 86-50 in the DakotaDome on Saturday afternoon.

Nicole Seekamp led the Coyotes (6-2) in scoring with 15 points while Margaret McCloud added 13 points. Raeshel Contreras and Kelly Stewart both tallied 12 points and Tia Hemiller finished with 11 points and five assists. All 10 Coyotes who played scored.

The Coyotes shot 52 percent (32-61) from the field and 44 percent (11-25) from 3-point range. They also tallied 21 assists. Hemiller, Contreras, McCloud and Kate Liveringhouse all tied for the team lead in rebounds with four. Defensively, South Dakota forced 21 turnovers with Contreras tallying three steals.

For the second straight game, USD never trailed its opponent. Through its first three home games this season (a total of 120 minutes), South Dakota has held the lead for all but 8 minutes and 37 seconds.

The Titans (3-5) were led by Chante Miles' 16 points and Hailey King's 13 points. Kathleen Iwuoha led all players in rebounds with seven.

The Coyotes outscored the Titans 36-16 in the paint, 22-9 in points off of turnovers, 14-2 on fast breaks and 30-19 in bench points. CSF led in second chance points 19-5.

South Dakota made 10 of its first 14 shots and led 21-2 after the first seven minutes of play. CSF was 1-of-10 shooting and committed five turnovers during that same stretch. Stewart scored all 12 of her points in the first half while Seekamp added 11 first half points to give the Coyotes a 47-20 lead at the break.

Cal State Fullerton was 8-for-31 (25.8 percent) shooting in the first half. Miles had five baskets and finished with 11 first half points.

The Coyotes stretched their lead to as many as 40 points in the second half. USD was 14-of-29 shooting in the half with Hemiller's nine points leading the way.

South Dakota will next host Valparaiso on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
