VERMILLION, S.D.—Junior Elena Tsakakis scored her first goal of the season, but it was not enough as the South Dakota women's soccer team fell to the Big East's Creighton 3-1 on Sunday at the USD Soccer Complex in Vermillion.
Creighton's Alyssa Jara had two goals within the first 20 minutes to lead the Bluejays (7-0-0) in the first half. Her first goal came in the sixth minute as the ball was crossed into the box, bounced off a Coyote defender and Jara finished it into the open net. Jara's second goal came in the 20th minute off two quick passes from teammates Alissa Kohmetscher and Stephanie Anasi.
The next goal came in the 76th minute by the Bluejays' Kirstyn Corder as she faked past Coyote goalkeeper Mackenzie Viktor for an open net.
Tsakakis scored the final goal of the game in the 83rd minute to put the Coyotes (4-4-0) on the board. Senior Shannon Keller passed the ball over the defenders to the right side of the box where Tsakakis shot the ball to the high left side of the net for a goal.
South Dakota had 17 shots to Creighton's 11, but Bluejay goalkeeper Danielle Rice recorded eight saves to keep the ball out of the net. Junior Taylor Nivala led the Coyotes in shots on goal with four, followed by senior Lauren Bennett with two.
South Dakota resumes action Friday at 3 p.m. against North Dakota at home in Vermillion.
