VERMILLION, S.D.—Junior Taylor Nivala scored twice to lead South Dakota past North Dakota for a 5-1 victory Friday at the USD Soccer Complex. The Coyotes' (5-4-0) win tied up the all-time series between the two Dakota teams 9-9-5.
Junior Rebecca Sparkman scored in the fourth minute to put the Coyotes up early. Her goal came off a deflection from a defender's save on freshman Kaitlin Ptacek's shot on goal. North Dakota (1-5-1) tied up the game two minutes later when Zoe Foster dribbled up the left side of the field past the defense for a long shot outside the goal box.
The game-winning goal came in the 16th minute by junior Danielle Anderson. Senior Lauren Bennett sent a corner kick into the box, where the ball bounced around between several players before Anderson tapped it in.
Nivala had the third and fourth goals for the Coyotes. Danielle Anderson started the play on Nivala's first goal. Anderson passed to junior Elena Tsakakis in the middle of the field. Tsakakis then sent the ball through the defenders to Nivala who had a sliding tackle past the goalie to put the ball in the net. Nivala's second goal was unassisted as she dribbled the ball between a North Dakota defender's legs for an open goal. Nivala leads the Coyotes with seven goals this season.
Junior Megan Anderson had her first goal of the year in the 74th minute to set the final score at 5-1. Bennett crossed the ball from the far right corner to Anderson in the middle for a goal.
