WATERLOO, Iowa--South Dakota held on for their fourth shutout of the season and scored twice to defeat Northern Iowa 2-0 on Sunday at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex in Waterloo.
The Coyotes (6-4-0) took the lead in the 30th minute as senior Colleen Reeves scored her third goal of the season. Reeves scored off an assist from senior Shannon Keller just inside the 18 yard goal box.
Junior Mackenzie Viktor had three saves in the first half to hold off the Panthers' (2-5-2) counter attacks.
"Mackenzie had an amazing save off of a piece they had put together," said head coach Mandy Green. "Within a minute of that save was when Taylor scored, which was a big moment for us. That killed the game right there."
South Dakota's insurance goal came in the 73rd minute. Junior Taylor Nivala broke away off of a counter to score her eighth goal of the season. Nivala's goal moves her past Lauren Miller of North Dakota State to lead the Summit League in goals scored this season.
"Taylor is being very active off the ball," said Green. "She is doing a great job creating opportunities for herself and putting them away. She came into this year ready to play and she has done a great job for us so far. She is doing the same things she has done in the past, but this year we have more people around her to set her up for great plays. Teams have to defend all of us instead of cherry picking off of one person."
The Coyotes are on the road again mid-week as they face off against Drake at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Des Moines, Iowa.
