VERMILLION, S.D.—A penalty kick by Ashley Martin ensured an Oral Roberts 1-0 victory over South Dakota at the USD Soccer Complex Friday afternoon.
The win improved the Golden Eagles to 5-4-2 (1-0-0 Summit League), while the Coyotes fell to 3-9-0 (0-1-0 Summit League).
Martin lined up for the penalty kick in the 47th minute following a defensive foul in the goalkeeper's box. Her strike went low and left of center into the net.
Both teams had a goal retracted in the first half after late off-sides calls. Senior
Elena Tsakakis would have put one up and over the defense had it not been for the call.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Sydney Hardin grabbed four saves during regulation play. The Coyote defense limited Oral Roberts to nine total shots.
On the attacking end, South Dakota senior
Taylor Nivala, junior
Corey Strang, sophomore
Courtney Baker, and freshman
Sammie Villwock each had a shot-on-goal grabbed by one of the two Golden Eagle goalkeepers Maddie Rhodes and Ryliegh Bohnenstiehl. Sophomore
Brittney Baker also took a free kick that bounced off the crossbar.
South Dakota finishes off its four-game home stand with Denver at noon Sunday.
