VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota overcame a 1-0 deficit, an hour and a half lightning delay, and down pouring rain to defeat Summit League foe IUPUI 2-1 on Friday at the USD Soccer Complex.
The win moves the Coyotes (6-11-0, 3-3-0 Summit League) into fourth place with nine points in the Summit League standings.
IUPUI (6-7-2, 1-3-1 Summit League) scored in the 18th minute as Kalli Shelper-Tucker sent a pass straight up the middle to Krissy Kirkoff. Kirkoff, the Summit League's second-leading scorer, turned and fired one off from just outside the box to the bottom right of the net.
The teams then waited through a 90-minute lightning delay after play was stopped with seven minutes remaining in the first half. They competed through a consistent rain – often heavy – when play resumed.
The Coyotes evened up the score in the 59th minute when a free kick by sophomore Brittney Baker found the head of junior Corey Strang inside the box. Strang jumped above her defender to head the ball inside the right post.
As the rain ensued and the pitch was dug up by cleats, play got scrappy. In the 30 minutes of action following Strang's goal there were eight fouls and one yellow card compared to the five shots taken.
Senior Taylor Nivala sent a corner kick in the 87th minute directly across the goal, where senior teammate Kasha Meyer headed it into the top middle of the goal. Not only was it the game-winner in an important league match, it was Meyer's first career goal.
IUPUI had a 9-8 advantage on shots taken and a 3-2 edge on corners. South Dakota sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Hardin faced five shots-on-goal by the Jaguars and grabbed four saves.
South Dakota returns to the USD Soccer Complex for the final time to host Western Illinois at noon Sunday.
