Seekamp's big fourth quarter tops IUPUI 65-59

WBB: USD 65, IUPUI 59

VERMILLION, S.D.—On a day when unforced errors were high and three-point percentage low, the constant remained senior guard Nicole Seekamp who scored a game-high 24 points in leading South Dakota to a 65-59 win against IUPUI Saturday inside the DakotaDome.

South Dakota (15-5, 6-1 Summit) has won five straight and remains tied for first place in the Summit League standings. IUPUI (13-7, 4-3 Summit) dropped both contests this week to South Dakota opponents. The Coyotes have won all five home games against the Jaguars in series history.

"This was a solid team win, but I felt we had a senior leader that put us on her shoulders at times," head coach Amy Williams said. "There were a lot of players that contributed, but Seekamp took control and carried us in the fourth quarter."

Seekamp scored over 20 points for the fourth time in her last five games. She also moved into third place on the Coyotes' career assists list. She had five steals and five assists Saturday. Seekamp had 12 in the fourth quarter, including the final free throws of the game with eight seconds remaining.

The Summit's top scoring offense in South Dakota (79.7 ppg) matched up against the Summit's top defense in IUPUI (57.8 ppg allowed). Jaguar opponents average 38.0 percent from the field. The Coyotes made 23-of-55 (41.8 percent) in the game.

Jaguar center Mikale Rogers scored 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and grabbed six boards. Rogers helped the Jaguars edge the Coyotes in the paint 30-28. Guard Kelsi Byrd also reached double-figure scoring with 10 points. She dished out a team-high four assists.

South Dakota senior center Margaret McCloud leads the Summit in field-goal percentage and shot 80 percent Saturday. She finished with eight points and three rebounds.

The Coyotes edged the Jaguars off the glass 30-29. Senior guard Tia Hemiller led the team on the boards with six. Hemiller also had nine points. Senior guard Kelly Stewart scored six points and grabbed four boards. Junior guard Caitlin Duffy added one made three and a three rebounds.

Although the Coyotes had fewer turnovers than the Jaguars, IUPUI capitalized by scoring 15 points off turnovers to South Dakota's 14.

South Dakota's bench scored 15 points, led by nine from junior guard Jasmine Trimboli. A pair of Trimboli's free throws with 4:16 left gave the Coyotes the lead for the remainder of the game. She also grabbed five boards. Junior center Abigail Fogg had her best game in league play, scoring four points and swatting the Jaguars with a pair of blocks. Junior forward Bridget Arens also had a bucket.

The Coyotes travel to Western Illinois Wednesday at 7 p.m.
