VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota senior guard
Nicole Seekamp scored a season-high 26 points to lead the Coyotes to an 82-76 win against Omaha Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
The Coyotes (11-5, 2-1 Summit) improved to 7-1 against their former NCC rival since both teams joined the Summit League. South Dakota also moved to 6-1 at home this season. Omaha (9-7, 2-2) lost to both South Dakota programs this week after starting 2-0 in conference play.
"This was a good win for our team against a good program," said head coach
Amy Williams. "Omaha played with renewed energy and enthusiasm after their loss to State. I am glad that we were able to grit this one out and protect our home court."
Seekamp scored 13 points in each half in registering her fourth 20-point effort this season. She also had a game-high six assists and stole two passes. Seekamp made 11 of 17 shots including two three-pointers.
Omaha was led by freshman post Caroline Hogue's career-high 25 points, who also had eight rebounds and four blocks. Hogue picked up two early fouls and played just three minutes in the first half. She scored eight of Omaha's first 10 points in the game.
Pre-season all-league junior forward Mikaela Shaw added 24 points for the Mavericks, which jumped two spots to 24th on UNO's all-time scoring chart. Sophomore Remy Davenport was also in double figures with 12 points.
Rebounding from a 10-point performance in the paint on Wednesday, South Dakota outscored Omaha 40-34 in the paint. Senior center
Margaret McCloud and sophomore center
Kate Liveringhouse split time in the post, each contributing 11 points. Liveringhouse also grabbed seven boards. Junior forward
Bridget Arens also finished with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting.
Senior guard
Kelly Stewart was the fourth Coyote in double figures with 12 points. Also shooting from outside were senior
Tia Hemiller and junior
Caitlin Duffy. Hemiller notched seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. She also made her 100th career 3-pointer in the game. Duffy had five points, four assists, and no turnovers.
"There's no rest for the weary," commented Williams. "Everyone in the league can say that. There's no easy games left – we are going to have to bring it every time out. It says a lot about our league and how the teams are continuing to improve."
South Dakota starts a Dakota road trip with North Dakota State at 7 p.m. Thursday in Fargo, N.D. The Coyotes then face in-state rival South Dakota State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.
