OMAHA, Neb. — South Dakota senior outside hitter
Audrey Reeg recorded her 11
th double-double of the season as the Coyotes beat the Omaha Mavericks 25-16, 19-25, 25-16, 25-15 Friday night in Sapp Fieldhouse.
South Dakota moves to 18-3 on the season and remains the only undefeated team in the Summit League with a 7-0 record. The Coyotes 7-0 mark is their best start in conference play since joining the Summit in 2011. With the loss, Omaha drops to 4-17 overall and 1-6 in league play.
"The one thing you can always count on is a battle from Omaha," said South Dakota head volleyball coach
Leanne Williamson. "Those players know the meaning of work and they don't give you many easy points.
"I was really proud of the way the team responded in sets three and four. We controlled the tempo from the start and played with a lot of confidence. We were more balanced offensively and our serving and passing game picked up tremendously. Winning on the road in this conference is tough, and we need to keep chipping away when we are faced with these opportunities.
Reeg had a match-high 19 kills with an attack percentage of .457. She added 12 digs to earn the double-double. She added one service ace and two total blocks.
Junior setter
Brittany Jessen kept the Coyote offense going with 39 assists. This is the 18
th game this season that she has recorded 30-plus assists.
Freshman
Elizabeth Loschen was second on the team with seven kills. Jessen and senior middle blocker
Lindsey Brown added six kills apiece. Redshirt-sophomore
Rachel Schmidt and sophomore
Hayley Dotseth both had five kills. The Coyotes outhit the Mavericks .330 to .151.
Defensively, sophomore libero
Lauren Mattison tallied a match-high 18 digs. Sophomore middle blocker
Kelly Braghini led the team with three total blocks and Schmidt added one more.
In the first set, the score was tied at eight before South Dakota used runs of 4-0 and 6-0 to take a 19-12 lead. Reeg recorded two kills and Jessen tallied one during the 4-0 run. During the second run, Mattison had two service aces while Brown, Schmidt and Loschen each swatted down a kill. The Coyotes opened the lead a little more and won the first set 25-16.
Omaha bounced back and won the second set 25-19. South Dakota came out on fire in the third set and took a 6-1 lead. Reeg recorded a kill and service ace during the run and Jessen and Loschen added one kill apiece. The Coyotes used the momentum and coasted throughout the rest of the set and won 25-16 to take a 2-1 match lead.
Set four started almost identical as the third as South Dakota jumped out to an early five-point lead and was up 7-2. USD used another 6-0 run in the middle of the set and had a 14-5 lead. The Coyotes never looked back and won the fourth set 25-15 and the match 3-1.
South Dakota continues its season on the road and travels to Denver, Colo., for a match against defending Summit League Champion Denver Sunday at 2 p.m. central time.
