VERMILLION, S.D.—Madison Frain pitched a five-hit shutout and Taylor Steinfeldt and Yvon Minogue homered in back-to-back innings to lead South Dakota to a 4-0 win against Western Illinois Saturday at Nygaard Field in the opening game of a three-game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader Sunday starting at 11 a.m.

Frain (6-9) struck out two and walked one to earn her second win in as many starts. She pitched out of jams in the third and sixth innings when the Leathernecks (9-23, 2-2 Summit) put two runs in scoring position with one out. She retired the side in order in the first and fourth innings.

Steinfeldt's first collegiate homer came with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and gave South Dakota (8-25, 3-1) a 3-0 lead. Minogue led off the fifth with a solo shot that made it 4-0. It was her fifth home run of the season and 22nd of her career, tying for sixth on the program's all-time list.

Western Illinois freshman pitcher Emily Ira (4-10) struck out the first seven batters she faced and finished with nine. She allowed one other hit outside the two homers.
