Coyotes pound Mastodons in 6-3 victory

WS: USD 6 FW 3

FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Tallying the most goals in a game since 2014, the South Dakota women's soccer team claimed a 6-3 victory over Fort Wayne Friday night at Hefner Complex.

The Coyotes never trailed in the contest, grabbing a 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals in 57 seconds. Taryn LaBree scored in the 26th minute when Kellee Willer found her in the middle of the box where she put a strike on the ball and into the net.

Just 57 seconds later, Amanda Carpio sent a pass to Willer inside the six-yard box who then quickly found the back of the goal.

"Shots that we were taking all season long that weren't going in, finally went in today," head coach Mandy Green said. "We've been talking all season about staying persistent and we finally broke through.

"We stuck to our game plan and the team played really well. It was a great win for us."

South Dakota tallied a season-high 26 shots, landing 13 on goal. Fort Wayne countered with 17 shots, landing 10 on frame.

Fort Wayne (1-12-0, 0-3-0 Summit) cut into the Coyote advantage in the 32nd minute on a Deanna Hecht goal.

Any momentum that the Mastodons gained was squashed as Zoe Anderson tallied her second goal of the season on an assist from Ellie Eskierka and a 3-1 lead heading into the intermission.

South Dakota (3-11-0, 1-3-0) scored a goal just 1:44 into the second half as LaBree found Sammie Villwock for the short goal and a commanding 4-1 advantage. The Mastodons tallied a 54th-minute goal but was quickly answered with LaBree's second goal of the contest and third of the season.

The two teams traded goals late in the game, with Fort Wayne gaining a goal from Kendall Quinn and the Coyotes scoring the final goal of the game off the foot of Willer for the 6-3 score.

Willer tallied a game-high seven shots, with three on goal while LaBree tallied six shots. Both Willer and LaBree totaled season-best shot totals. Villwock attempted three shots, placing two on goal.

Sydney Hardin made seven saves in net for the Coyotes in her third-straight start. Emma Gaggioli tallied seven saves for Fort Wayne.

The six goals scored are the most for USD since 2014 when scoring 11 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Coyotes look to carry the momentum in to the final home game of the season on Friday against Western Illinois. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. at First Bank & Trust Soccer Complex.
